Thread: NHS Fiasco |

I think we can all agree the NHS is not fit for purpose, why, well everyone will have an opinion and as for solutions only God will know the answer. Most people myself included dread getting ill as it’s a lottery whether you will receive timely attention. Tony |

A new motor/controller plus DRO will be an improvement only you can tell if it's worth it? OR do you want a shiny new thing? Tony |

Correct, not a retracting top slide, a nice clean machine though.
If it is not, then what is the lever at the side of the compound slide for? Although it has a grease nipple in it, it sure ain't for lubrication. The machine is here: https://www.suffolksteam.co.uk/myford-245v-plus-long-bed-lathe-with-vertical-mill-drill-attachment Yes looking at the pictures again and the video shows the retracting top slide in action Tony Edited By Tony Pratt 1 on 08/12/2022 17:32:47 |

Thread: Dividing head |
04/12/2022 11:10:19 |
Hi Peter, you will have to give us more details of your needs before we can advise you of the best course of action, Vevor are one of many suppliers of dividing heads, all copies of the original American made Browne & Sharp item. BS0 is the smallest & then BS1, also Vertex are/used to be a better quality item compared to the no name brands but that may have changed. |

Sadly, a lot of folk have no technical knowledge or appreciation of basic physics, or how things work generally. But you can't blame people for grasping at such things when fuel prices are so high and the energy suppliers are making BILLIONS in profits. The price of fuel in Saudi Arabia is, or was, a few cents per litre, so why is our own North sea oil so expensive to us? . Edited By John Doe 2 on 24/11/2022 11:28:02 Tax..... ? Yes mainly tax, and why are we so highly taxed?? I will stop there as it's political. Tony

Iv'e never met a hardened lathe chuck in 50 plus years of using them, as per SOD a file will confirm or not it's state of hardness. Tony |

I don’t have access to a press but think that may be my best option. I just need to find someone with a press near me (Herts/Bucks). Tony, you make a good point about how I measure. How should one get bearings on and off a shaft without damaging things? I could heat the bearings or chill the shaft I guess. Edited By John D on 15/11/2022 21:13:53 I think using a press on your spindle is about the worse thing you could do, you quote 'I am getting in the range of .0075-.01mm runout in the centre', I'm not really sure of your checking method but that is damm good on a maybe unimportant diameter as per Jason B. Just wait for new bearings and rotate the spindle in them with the installed bearings on vee blocks, you can then check the R8 taper. Tony |
15/11/2022 22:51:17 |
John, you are now talking about less than .01mm runout? Tony |
15/11/2022 19:45:14 |
You need to support the appropriate bearings in vee blocks and rotate the spindle checking runout to get an idea of what is going on, be very careful how you check things. Tony Edited By Tony Pratt 1 on 15/11/2022 19:45:59 |

As has been pointed out, single point thread cutting is simple enough and cost effective. One tool will cut many different threads, and cut them well, no bumps or bends. For something like that, the last thing I would use would be a stocks and die, too much messing around. Agreed; two common, short M10 threads are hardly worth setting up to screw cut. I still can't understand why anyone would start by screwcutting and finish with a die, instead of just using the die for the whole job.
And I wonder why Bernard requires such precision from something as basic as a toolpost stud? Totally disagree, a tool post stud is a vital part of the work cutting and tool registration setup, full marks to Martin for realising making crap is not the way to go. As regards using an M10 die straight off, it seems easy but not likely to give the best of results. Tony

As usual we have drifted 'off topic', I personally don't care about a 'polyphase AC (sine or switched current) stator with a wound DC rotor. ' . Tony Edited By Tony Pratt 1 on 11/11/2022 19:40:14 |

Quick answer is yes but it will need some digging to find it all. I will have a look but others may be quicker. Just Googled 'Drill sharpening Graham Meek', plenty there to start with. Tony Edited By Tony Pratt 1 on 10/11/2022 17:55:34 |
Thread: Another Smart Meter thread. |
09/11/2022 20:04:03 |
OK guys, advice please. I do not want or desire a 'smart meter' & thus far have resisted my suppliers pleas to have one installed, they are now saying I must have a new meter installed due to safety concerns as my old meter is 15 years old! Can I still refuse, I'm guessing not ? Tony |
