Thread: Advice on Cluttered Dimensions in Drawings
21/03/2022 16:03:08

If a drawing starts to get too cluttered with dimensions I do all X axis dimensions one layer and all Y axis dimensions on another, then I can print off two drawings for the workshop that are easier to read.

An excellent job, if I wore a hat I would take it off to you!

Thread: Herke Tapping Machine
20/03/2022 13:05:39

Bill the spring holds the handle in a horizontal position, the spring retaining collar on top of the spindle on my machine is 70mm from the top of the thrust race in its neutral position. I cannot help with what the friction material actually is as I have never had the clutch apart.

20/03/2022 09:36:28

I have owned a Herke tapper for 30 years and never seen any manual or instructions apart from what is on Lathes UK site. To be honest you don’t need a manual to strip one of these machines down, just a couple of punches to get the taper pins out of the clutch plates. Is your clutch slipping or are you being too gentle with it? It is quite surprising the amount of pressure required, they need a good heavy pressure throughout the stroke. If you are convinced your clutch is slipping a squirt of brake cleaner will help.

Roger how do you know that your table has a small lean to the right of vertical, do you really mean that when you fox the vertical head in position with the tapered dowel it doesn’t tram square. Why don’t you tap the head square with the table and re-ream the taper pin hole, it will then be true.

Thread: Damp shed: what’s the best way to add ventilation?

If it were me I would invest in a decent dehumidifier, dessicant one for preference and one that has a continuous drain facility.

I was always taught that cutters under 1/4 inch wide you keyed the arbor and collars either side of the cutter but not the cutter itself, for cutters wider than 1/4 inch you keyed the cutter. Totally agree about slitting saws exploding, have seen dozens of them, I would also say that you should not use power feed with slitting saws for the same reason.

Thread: Myford Lubrication Oil
12/03/2022 09:00:38

Don’t think it really matters what oil you use, any oil is better than none. I use chainsaw oil on the slideways it tends to cling and my garden machinery supplier usually has it on offer, it seems that the local tree surgeons no longer use it, they have found a cheaper alternative, sunflower oil from the local supermarket. I also use chainsaw oil for lubricating the loco, doesn’t get flung off of the motion when running as much as normal oil does.

Very sound advice Noel!

Thread: Is this distasteful
10/03/2022 08:54:03

I find the subject interesting and think it should continue, as said earlier gunsmithing techniques are ingenious and as model engineers these techniques may well be useful to us in our workshops.

I would just like to point out that 0.02mm is not .008”, Old money or new, it is around eight tenths of a thou.

Thread: Lever operated tailstock attachment Myford

I think they are advertised for silly money, not sure if they actually sell for it, I have seen a dealer in the south west advertising one for over a year now and he hasn’t sold it.

Thread: Tomato seed recommendation?
07/03/2022 15:08:14

Used to grow Gardeners delight,Alicante and Moneymaker but in recent years have had very poor results, a couple of years ago I tried Tumbling Tom, a trailing cherry tomato and was very impressed with them, three plants to a hanging basket and away they go, no side shoots to cut out and loads of small tasty tomatoes, reminds me I must get to garden centre and get this years seeds.

Isn’t there anyone in Italy who could grind a lead on one of your taps for you?

Nice sharp drills and you will be OK. Nowhere near as bad as stainless.

So who is Lyle Peterson (Tubal Cain)?

Tubal-cain is named in the Old Testament as being the first blacksmith. Much symbolism has attached to him over the centuries, including a link to Freemasonry, who have long been suspected by conspiracy theorists of being a secret society.

Freemasonry is not a secret society, it is a society with secrets, and no I am not a member.

Thread: How to make this?
22/02/2022 11:31:42

Made one a couple of weeks ago for my daughter, she has an Axminster polishing machine that takes 6 inch mops but they are held like grinding wheels with flanges and a nut. She wanted to be able to use smaller mops and so we decided she needed a pigtail. Axminster sell them but they are clamped on by grubscrews, I don’t like the idea if the shaft getting graunched up by the screws or one becoming loose and hitting her in the face so my version screws on the end of the spindle. I used taper turn attachment set at about 10 degrees and 12 tpi, the coarsest thread the lathe will cut. I used a screw cutting style tool but at about 40 degree angle, and for depth, cut it until it looks right. Took about an afternoon to do.
