Talking about idiots on motorcycles, me and the missus took a run down to the New Forest yesterday, going along a narrow twisty road towards Exbury gardens we were followed by an idiot on a motorcycle, he was all over the road trying to pass me so coming across a suitable passing space I pulled in to let him pass. As he flew past we could both see quite clearly that he had a dog sat on the petrol tank. He was gone before I could get his number.

Certainly far better service than I got out of the previous owners.

I agree about the coolant but they were industrial machines so most have been used with coolant, place I used to work used water only, reason being they were machining components containing magnesium oxide powder and it was ok to get it wet with water but not oil, the oil could not be removed but the water could be dried out in an oven, the components were stored in an oven overnight, the damage the water caused had to be seen to be believed. I wouldn’t waste my time checking headstock bearings, if they are good it will run quietly, if they are shot you will soon hear it. If the machine doesn’t have collets has it got the collet closer or drawbar with it?

Must admit to not using Blackgates any more because of the difficulty getting hold of them and no online shop.

I had Bako around about 1959, a grey base peppered with about 2mm dia holes that rods of various lengths were inserted in and then blocks about 20mm square were slid into place between the rods. Lot of my rods got bent putting them in and taking them out, I must have been a bit ham fisted as a child, old age hasn’t seen me get @ny better.

Oh well six days have gone by and Col21 doesn’t seem to want to share with us. Most probably Blackgates sell the correct Tufnol, if not try Reeves. I seem to remember that the Tufnol needs heat treating to get a curve in to it and I seem to remember Martin Evans saying that it is coiled into a circular tin of the correct size and heated until just before it blisters, I don’t know how you know what size tin is correct and I have no idea at all how you heat it to a point just before blistering occurs, much like his other statements of make in the usual way, when he couldn’t be bothered to describe a process. Many years ago I was going to build Evans’s Conway but the faffing about with the Tufnol put me off. As you may have already guessed I am not a fan of Evans. Have you got the articles published in EIM on Lila, they may throw some light on the springs.

Not going to be easy manually operating lever type cocks, how are you going to manually operate all four together without linkage? Steam operated or automatic will both be suitable alternatives.

Reading your posts it seems to me that you have no idea what you are doing, rather than cobble something up just to sell the lathe surely it would be be better to sell the lathe as a non runner and let the new owner sort out a motor themselves

Andrews method is correct, in fact it is very difficult if not impossible to do any other way on a Clarkson.

My filing buttons have always been hardened, never tempered and always allowed to rotate. New files are kept for brass and when they loose their edge they are used on steel, when they are nearly worn out they are used for filing button duty. Never had a problem with buttons rotating.

Or try your local model engineering society, there are a couple in your area.

As Old Mart says turning a taper won’t really work, best bet is to buy a couple from somewhere like Tracy Tools. Life is too short to p++s about trying to modify them without the correct equipment.

What about a worm drive clip, used to be called Jubilee clips.

If you have only had the machine a few months you should be telling this story to the bloke who sold it to you and asking for a replacement chuck.
