Hi , my 250watt mini lathe motor has a fault……I have to keep cleaning the armature to get it to run…..I think there is a short in the windings……so, I have obtained a 500wattSIEG brushless motor…having now done a bit of research it’s not just a case of connecting the wires to the old wiring…..can anyone tell me in very simple terms if I can fit the SIEG motor and how to do it…..the motor is a Seig W80-500 WD 230volt. 2.8 amp……is it really 230 volt or does it run on a lower DC current.

the motor has a black box on the back end with 2 x wiring harnesses One has blue, red, brown and green/yellow (Earth)

the second harness has 6 wires with a small white plug on the end.

thanks

You would need a completely different board and switch gear to even stand a chance of running the DC brushless motor as it needs has the additional connections for the hall sensor etc that are within the motor. But that is only half the story as the torque characteristics are quite different to the Brushed DC motor that you have and the SC3 that the Brushless is meant for does not use a two ratio gear box.

It's 230V DC

You would have done better sourcing a brushed replacement or going for a complete 3-phase & VFD conversion

Thanks for that……I got the motor for nothing so would like to use it…..I read that quite s few have used brushless 500 watt motors using motors that are available for sewing machines and they come with digital controllers…..can I not get a similar controller and hook it up to my SIEG motor.

I doubt you can get a Sieg one as the usual Supplier is a bit choosy about who they supply boards to and only tend to do so to existing owners as replacements should they be needed.

may be able to use a generic one but would need the chip and other adjustments set right to get the best from the motor and save damage

I don't know the answer. Motors usually come with a matched controller and without that the repairer has to understand enough detail to make the match.

The 110V brushed DC motor normally fitted to mini-lathes is fairly easy - relatively simple wiring and lots of suitable controllers are sold on ebay and others if you can't find a direct swap for the machine.

Replacing with a 3-phase motor and VFD is fairly straightforward, otherwise it can get difficult.

A recent question about a Wabeco lathe hasn't had a good answer yet because it's DC motor has field winding inputs and a tachometer output, so both it and the controller are unusual enough to be mysterious.

Some other machines are fitted with 2-speed motors, or two or more 3-phase motors. They're a complication I would rather avoid!

Your Seig motor is brushless, details unknown, so although it may be possible to get it going with a sewing machine controller, I doubt anyone on the forum or in the trade knows for sure what to buy. Might get lucky if someone reads this and has done it already. I don't recall anyone reporting having to repair a Seig brushless lathe yet.

Easier to get a brushless sewing machine motor and controller together as a package, because someone else has already sorted out the details. Buying a package avoids the possibility of accidentally causing the dreaded magic smoke, or hitting a wiring puzzle can't be fixed by hard-thinking. As mistakes are expensive, may be better to bite the bullet and buy a replacement motor of the type that's failed - minimal change fitting and reconnecting, so low risk.

Thanks for that….I did buy a Armadale 500watt motor expecting to be a simple fit….however it is 10mm to long to fit the space available …if I move it back from the space the belt fouls all sorts of covers….so my new master plan is to fabricate a bearing block, fit in original space ,fit a pulley on each end of new spindle and work from there….I want to get this lathe up and running to sell as I have a Myford on the way….very excited ! Thanks for your input.

Reading your posts it seems to me that you have no idea what you are doing, rather than cobble something up just to sell the lathe surely it would be be better to sell the lathe as a non runner and let the new owner sort out a motor themselves

Only need one word - no.

The "replacement" motor is a totally different animal. It will need a different control board and most likely some mechanical changes to make it fit. I'd agree with Baz; I doubt the sale price would justify the time and money needed to change the motor, unless it is an exact like for like swap.

O.k got the message…….got the SIEG given to me and thought it was worth investigating….

If you want a direct replacement, look at Arc Euro Trade for C2 and C3 spares.

At one time, both motors and control boards were available.
