Hi ,Have been interested in hot air engines for many years, tried to make them work with mixed results. There is a museum in Hereford , " The waterworks museum" . which has a large collection of full size engines,in steam sometimes. well worth a visit . Keep up the good work .

best wishes Maurice.

Thread: drying out of flux / prefluxing of silver solder.

Hi again misspelled DIEWERSOL Maurice.

12/01/2016 12:07:09

Hi RRMBK Try mixing borax with meths into a paste ,when heated it does not bubble and also wets the joint right through.I always use this method when I silver solder my jewelry bits . I also use DIEWRSOL soldar liquid (spelled SOLDAR) ,this is expensive but works well on gold silver and all other non ferrous metals.

Hi Brian again ,The only other way is to use a diamond wheel .Not got mind in gear this morning. Maurice.

24/12/2015 09:59:24

Hi Brian , The easy way is to scratch the tube ONE third the way round , we had what we called a glass knife, made I think of tungsten carbide but anything that will scratch the tube will work, this will work on tube up to half inch. wear leather gloves,or as I did a duster in each hand and grip the tube ,one hand on each side of the mark and the mark on top, thumbs on top then pull and bend at the same time downwards (each thumb close to the mark) wear goggles just in case . I have broken off pieces from a five foot tube 3/8 " diameter and four inches long . This all depends on diameter and length to be broken .I was once working as a glass blower making apparatus for a laboratory. Hope this helps ,and do not be frightened of it .

best wishes and a happy yuletide Maurice.

Crazy thought , use small bike type chain as rack, ends fastened to left and right of saddle. running over sprockets each end of travel. sprocket hand wheel on saddle to move it , I said it was crazy but it might work.

Thread: Soft end MT mandrels - soft att the way through ?
18/06/2015 16:08:18

Hi Mike arceuro has MT3 blank end arbors 1.25" 1.5"" each with3/8" thread 40mm with12mm thread .

I have the metric one and have made a hollow draw bar with 12mm bolts each end ,drilled 8mm,and hexagon heads turned down to fit in tube,(leave shoulder to line bolt up ) .Bore conical hole in bolt head so thin tube will find easy way through.. You will have to make all to fit in the spindle before soldering together.

Hope this makes sence Maurice

Thread: What's your best tool purchase ?
13/05/2015 10:54:24

A friend was throwing away a 21" DISSTON panel saw because the blade was bent. He had already bought a new

saw. My grandfather was a blacksmith and showed me how to straiten them ,which I did .I now have a beautiful tool ,certainly my favourite . There are eight names ,(removed) and one still there N.STALLON ,I wonder who he was? My cheapest tool. My most expensive ,a set of useless drills , It seems that many of us are caught ,but only once .

Thread: Record Vice Numbers
19/02/2015 19:13:12

Hi Philip ,I have my Great Grandfathers Record vice from the 1890's.He was a black smith as was my Grandfather

!t has 5 1/4" .jaws ,7" opening quick release and is a no 24 .I have used this for much of my life as my father had no interest in mechanical work. there is no rust just a black patina and in good condition for its age.

I do not know what the numbers refer to but if there are enough answers to the question maybe it will become clear

Here's hoping. Maurice .
