Thread: drill sets

I am not sufficiently expert to know what you mean by an AF** set but I would buy from here:

** a/f or even A/F is frequently used as an abbreviation for 'across flats' as in, for example, hexagonal metal, nuts etc.

I've yet to encounter hexagonal drills.

Usual disclaimer.

Thread: Woodworking

I'm fed-up with all this easy-peasy metalworking nonsense, just taking ten years to make an extraordinarily beautiful triple expansion marine engine for example.

I hope to make a start on this tomorrow:

' hope to have it finished by Christmas. Please don't ask which Christmas!!

Whether you are inclined towards optimism or pessimism with regard to electric cars I suspect you will find the 2012 Tesla Model S of some interest:

Thread: Please assist with my fist mill choice
29/10/2012 23:43:08

I note Mick that you don't have 3-phase and that your preference is for a new machine, however, I urge you to consider a tool-room quality used machine, the Centec 2B.

Lathes.co.uk will give you all the information you need where you will learn that the version with the quill vertical head is the most desirable. They appear regularly on ebay. It also has a horizontal capability, mine came without the arbor but craftsman par excellence, Mr Graham Meek made one for me at a very acceptable price to a standard, if the truth be known, that is probably better than Centec's.

May I respectfully remind you to enquire of any ebay vendor whether he will place and secure the machine on/to a pallet. Palletline transport service fees are very reasonable.

Finally, there is a Yahoo support group.

Thread: Please tell me what this 'cog' is called!

I was going to suggest one of those 'cogs' which pulled tractor paper through the old dot-matrix printers but you beat me to it with your image tsb.

Perhaps I was exagerating by 50metres! Do have a look at this YouTube video, the scenery is a joy and come the Spring there will be thousands of bluebells. Sorry, the first train was IC hauled, not steam!

thriving club. The building of an 800metre extension to the 7.25" ground level track was completed today after considerably less than six months work which also saw the earth moving work on a model boat pond completed. Congratulations fellow members.

Thread: Cnc conversion of WARCO WM18

Googling Warco WM18 CNC conversion reveals the following:

although I don't have the time to find out whether this is recent information or no. Additionally it appears that the WM18 is similar to the BF30 in which case Optimum do a conversion kit:

Thread: John Wilding Skeleton Clock
16/10/2012 11:23:59

It is in the public domain that John Wilding has down-sized his property in the recent past. Many of his clocks were auctioned at one of the famous London auction houses, I believe it was Bonhams in May 2011. I f you have the time you might be able to find the auction results but I remember thinking at the time that they were fairly disappointing; I seem to recall that £1,600 was the highest bid for a skeleton clock given John Wilding's expertise and eminence in contemporary British horology.

You say yours is nearly complete, but how much of the polishing has been done?

Thread: Sieg super x3 mill
06/10/2012 09:19:25

Have you considered the Warco WM18? Similar in price, although, at least 30kg heavier which bodes well for those experienced folk who recommend bulk in their machines. An ex-editor of MEW gave it a very favourable review in issue 153, I'm not aware that he had to, "strip it down and re-build before using". I must declare that I don't have a WM18 myself but I can recommend their DH-1 vice which I do have. My mill is a Centec 2B. Usual disclaimer with regard to Warco.

For reasons that escape me angry 2 we weren't allowed to use chloroform in schools when wishing to bond acrylic. Tensol 12 works equally well but it is best to leave the workshop door open!! Tensol 12 seems to be available on eBay.

The late George Daniels was undoubtedly the most famous horologist of recent times having had one of his escapements adopted by Omega.

for a chance to buy one of his time pieces. Hover momentarily over the thumbnail images when, in most instances, a bar should appear giving a guide price. Remember the buyer's premium and the subsequent VAT.

Thread: Tap Chuck ?

I have the smaller of the two versions available from Warco, total axial travel is approx. 30-32mm minus the amount used to hold it in the tailstock. I have yet to use it but it seems nicely made considering the price.
