Are we looking through the bottom and is there a cover plate, greasing plastic gears means you can trap dirt, swarf etc which would then become a grinding paste, I think you have a catch 22 regarding lubrication.

That must be the only town in England that doesn't have a hairdresser every fifth shop. Barbers are admittedly rarer but as one doesn't need to visit them more than a couple of times a decade it doesn't much matter. I'm more concerned about finding NHS Dentists.

In Sandy Bedfordshire there are three Barbers within sight of each other and two of them are almost on opposite sides of the street and that doesn't include hairdressers all in a town that takes just over five minutes to drive through.

Bedford town has been like that for years but the last couple of years they have relented and now give two hours free parking on Saturdays, there is a Park and Ride service running every day which means you can park all day for one hours parking in town, it doesn't help that major retailers have gone belly up which is quiet a few shops in town.

No all carved from solid or fabricated except the flywheel which is a Stuart 10 size casting.

Scaled down to 24mm bore from the Alyn half scale drawings with suitable alterations for size and not using castings.

This "naked" shot of it sat on my tailstock shows the bare materials.

I see full size Robinsons at vintage rallies during the summer and I have one of those burners with its stand to boil my tea kettles, its one of the best I've bought for camping.

This forum has several small shortcomings of this type. No doubt Neil regularly lobbies his management to fix them. No doubt Neil's management look at the cost and decide not to bother - yet. No doubt when the forum software reaches end-of-life, its replacement will be better.

No I don't lobby for changes, I have set out what i woudl like to see in replacement software, including links to forums that I think use better software.

FWIW I think most forums use software that could be improved, not just this one.

Thread: Fitting an adjustable damper to my power saw
29/11/2018 13:23:39

With thanks to Larry Phelan and Mike Cox I now have all the information to modify my saw with a damper but I now have another question.

I was given my saw, a band saw type and similar to the Warco 4.5" universal Bandsaw, in a very sorry state which meant I had to strip it completely and clean, rebuild and replace bearing guides, it had a replacement electric motor when I got it so I've never queried its direction of cutting, the blade cuts on the forward stroke but now I'm not sure if its running in the right direction, any views please.

Larry, Can you please confirm your address as its partially unreadable on the envelope the magazine came in.

Thread: Colchester triumph 2000 driving me crazy
28/11/2018 19:40:41

I've been racking my brain for past experience and remember that as a Reliability Engineer I used to send our Colchester lathes to a company called Curtis machine Tools, Ardleigh nr Colchester who would grind and re harden the bed ways, if memory serves correctly the headstock comes of the bed ways as one lump and it wouldnt hurt to see if there is any muck underneath that lifted it up.

Thread: DIY Epoxy Frame based CNC MILL
26/11/2018 09:00:05

Many years ago, 80's, when I worked as a machine tool fitter we had grinding machine's, from memory Studer, whose bases were made from concrete, the reasoning was that manufacture was quicker and they didn't need stabilising.

The mechanical's sat on inset plates which stood proud so that when the base was finished the plates could be machined to get everything level and steel plates were embedded into the base underside so that leveling feet could be fitted.

Pneumatic cylinder idea has a downside in that the two ends of the cylinder don't have the same volumes ( because of the piston rod). I've seen machines using this idea but they have a second cylinder that the fluid uses as a reservoir when the capacity of the rod end of the main cylinder capacity isn't enough. Filling and bleeding the system can be a bugger to do though.

I think I've got that covered by getting a cylinder that has a little longer than necessary stroke so will never fully empty the restricted end and having filled and bled hydraulic table jacking systems in my last job I think that is sorted as well wink

Clive,

You have just clicked a switch in my brain smiley small pneumatic cylinder with both ends connected by a tube with a flow restrictor in the middle, fill cylinder with oil.

Gentlemen,

I collected my new saw blades this morning and whilst chatting to the saw company owners they asked what damping control my saw had, mine has an adjustable spring, they suggested that the spring method doesn't give a stable even load because as the blade drops down the weight of the carrier frame causes the load to change, its not linear.

They suggested that several customers have modified their saws by fitting adjustable hydraulic dampers, I've had a quick look on the web and haven't seen anything small enough and adjustable, I could make my own but has anybody done this themselves.

Thread: Cutting a large round hole

The tool Jason refers to as a trepanning tool is probably what John and I call a tank cutter, originally used in an old fashioned brace, or very low speed power drill.

Emgee

A tank cutter to me is a hole saw, clamp between wood and preferably on a drill/mill table, dont run to fast and lubricate as you go.
