Thread: Vertical to Horizontal Mill conversion.
19/12/2011 17:17:06
Having destroyed a couple of 'good quality' angle grinders, their main failing is the gearbox or the bearings.
Angle grinders are not built to be accurate or particularly efficient in the transfer of power/drive from the motor to the spindle. You will find that the gearbox is the biggest source of noise in these machines and is testament to the poor fit and quality of the gears.

I would look for a proper right angle drive for your mill.
You didn't state what make/model of mill you have but have a look on ebay for a bridgeport horizontal drive adapter, they do come up occasionally and are well worth the money.
Alternatively, there was an article in MEW a few years back describing the construction of a right angle drive for a mill. I f you can't find it, I may have the details somewhere.

Anyway, as a recommendation - Don't use an angle grinder gearbox if you want accuracy and longevity

Hi Gerry, glad you're sorted, I must admit the belt drive and larger motor will be a great improvement over the original X2. I built my own belt drive after shredding the poxy plastic gears on the original drive system. A bigger motor is next on the cards along with the CNC conversion. These are great little mills for smaller stuff. Enjoy

Are you engaging the dog teeth on the coarse feed handwheel by pushing it in towards the head casting, I'm assuming the mechanism is the same as on my X2 clone
Thread: MEW index interfaces application
13/12/2011 22:58:55
Hi Dias,
I would be quite willing to test drive this application, I had been considering the same as the original app produced by Alan Munday does not function correctly under windows 7.

Are you going to make the source code available as well as the app?

Thread: The Sandown Park Model Engineer Exhibtion 2011
11/12/2011 21:04:13
I went on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I felt it was a well organised event and probably the best one yet, I was there until the end and I have never stayed that long in the past!

The SMEE presence was exceptional this year and it was great to catch up and make new acquaintances.

The standard of models presented once again was excellent although I thought that having this in the downstairs area was not as good as the upstairs area used in previous years.

The layout of the exhibitors area was generally very good and there was sufficient room around the stands to be able to move freely without colliding with others.

I must say, I think I had my blinkers on as I did not see the MyHobbyStore stand, I have missed this in previous years and maybe there needs to be a more 'prominent' presence, ( or just a sign for those of us with tunnel vision for bargains LOL ).

Al in all a good show and an improvement on previous years.
Well done to all involved.

Thread: Greiner Ultrasonic Cleaner Repairs
09/12/2011 16:20:03
Hi,
EL34's are common output valves in guitar power amplifiers.

I'm sure this device can be resurrected, there are many manufacturers of suitable transformers for use in valve amplifiers and I suspect they are not too far away in specification from what you require, if you are close enough to East Hampshire or can get the unit to me, I am sure I can resurrect this for you. I have a great deal of experience working with valve based equipment and looking at the photos you have posted, this looks to be a fairly simple ( in valve technology terms) type of device. As long as the components are available (and all of the valves are!) there should be more life in the old dog yet.

Send me a PM and we can discuss this further offline.

kind regards

Thread: How many T-Slots on a Rotary Table, 3,4,6?
06/12/2011 19:39:49
Four slots are defintely better than three on anything of 6inch or greater RT, my 6inch has 3 and it is a real pain at times, the 12inch has four and gets a lot more use!
As far as dividing sets go, if you intend doing a lot of gear cutting or work requiring precision division, then get the set with the table. That said, I have just completed a DivisionMaster kit from MEDW and am in the process of fitting a RT with a stepper. For the amount of gear cutting I have ahead of me, (2 sets of gears for 2 traction engines) I am sure this will make life a lot easier and will reduce the brain strain!!
Thread: Super 7 Going 3 Phase
29/11/2011 19:39:21
If you want a proper rpm display, have a look at medw if you have any questions, drop Lester an email, he will be only too happy to help.
This tacho is excellent, I built one from tie original designs produced by Tony Jeffree and have modded it to suit but the one Lester sells is superb.

Thread: Moving a lathe
27/11/2011 16:41:51
My Warco GH1330 was delivered off a tail lift 7.5 tonne box wagon. The lathe was loaded onto an extended palletiser and then manouvered onto the tail lift, I had visions of the whole lot tipping off as the tail lift lowered.
When a tail lift initially moves, they invariably drop the outer edge first, putting the load into an outward leaning position. At this point in proceedings I was considering my escape options!

Be very aware that a lathe of this size is extremely top heavy and unstable.
If using a tail lift, I would recommend using a winch of some description connected to the lifting eye and fixed to a secure mounting at the front of the vehicle loadspace, this will restrain the lathe as the tail lift is lowered and can be adjusted as it is lowered..

Once on the ground, the scaffold bar rollers would be ideal but be careful as even on a small incline a load of this size can quickly run away.
( I moved a 1.5 tonne Ajax Turret mill this way down a 6 degree slope into my workshop and it was scary!!

Get as much help as you can, use ropes to allow helpers to stabalise the load from a safe distance

With all that said, I moved both the mill and lathe into their final resting place on my own with toe jacks, trolley jacks and wheeled pry bars, a lot of sweat, no tears or missing appendages, and a couple of lagers when all done .
Just take care and use bucket loads of common sense.
and... best wishes for a succesful move.

Similar handles can be had from Axminster Tools not sure how good they are but not had any complaints about any of their products so far.

Thread: New Blocks on the Block
19/11/2011 10:44:37
This post now stretches to 4 pages!!

I think it is well past the time when this thread was locked and the matter put to bed.

Once again, thanks to John S and Ketan for the product and Bogs for bringing it to our attention in the first place.

Graeme (going to the workshop to tinker with my engines!)
18/11/2011 11:39:13
Thanks to John (Bogs) for bringing this to our attention and to John S for designing these blocks.
Ordered mine yesterday and they arrived in the post this morning.

They are very well made and finished, just a shame they don't come with a couple of screws, but that is a very minor criticism.

Thread: How heavy is my loco?
15/11/2011 16:07:51
if you have the empty weight of the engine, and know the volume of water in the boiler and tanks, you can add 1Kg (2.2lbs) per litre of water to the empty weight of the engine giving you the all up weight of a fully laden engine.

Thread: spark eroder
10/11/2011 15:12:49
Hi, if you are a member of SMEE, Mike will gladly share the details of the device.

This is not a simple design and requires the programming of a microprocessor.

It is a very efficient design however, there is another route.

Ben Flemming has produced 2 designs for an EDM, one is RC based and the other is a more advanced pulse design, both of which use readily available components and do not require a micro or any programming.

Search Yahoo groups for EDMHomeBuilders for more details or PM me, as I have both of the books and PCB's in build if you require any further info

Thread: Milling from a sheet
08/11/2011 18:13:39
Don't use Melamine faced board as a 'packing' or underlay board for this process. As Jason has said, Melamine is extremely abrasive and will destroy HSS cutters, it has a detrimental effect on carbide cutters!

I would agree with the use of ply or even MDF, although both of these can cause premature cutter wear due to the nature of the adhesives used to bond the particulates which constitute these man made boards.

For best results when machining thin materiels, i use a sacrificial aluminium plate beneath the workpiece and a smaller mdf plate above the work to provide support and prevent lifting of the workpiece.

Thread: Warco Super Metric Mill - Easson DRO
03/11/2011 16:16:13
I have to agree with Richard regarding support from Machine-DRO. I have been enquiring about replacing the console on my Ajax mill and compatibility with the existing Mitutoyo scales and the level of service is far above what ou would normally expect. These guys are genuinely interested in helping you achieve the best solution

Thread: Collet Chuck
27/10/2011 17:31:09
Hi Boldminer, did you ever find a source for these collets?
I have been offered a similar chuck without collets but I don't want to lumber myself with a doorstop.

Thread: Anyone have a Worden grinder? Experiences?
26/10/2011 14:00:49
I have had a Worden Mk3 for a number of years and am very happy with its capabilities.

I would recommend getting the 4 facet drill grinding attachment in addition to your list.
Also, take a look through past issues of MEW as there are a number of articles, mainly by Jim Whetren on mods and improvements to the base machine.

If I had one criticism of the machine, that would be that the wheel height is not adjustable, this can be addressed in a number of ways. As I am currently building a quorn (for the fun of it) I haven't yet addressed this shortcoming but I would probably go with a round column and a feedscrew arrangement to raise/lower the motor.

As far as the build goes, it is quite straightforward, the instructions and plans supplied are more than adequate to produce a useable machine. Just be very careful when boring the cast Iron slide block for the table, I made 2 before I was satisfied with the fit, but then, at that time, I was using a fairly well worn lathe so I ended up with the first one bored about 1.5 thou ouversize, the second was spot on.

Also be careful to ensure that all of the guide bars in the sliding frame are absolutely the correct length and all the same as this will affect the ability to move the table easily.

If you are in my locality, I am more than happy for you to come and take a look at the finished machine.
