Hello all,

Thanks to the data provided by Mr. Chris Orchard, there's a new version of ME_Indexes. Now the data covers up to the last volume (209).

There's also some new data in the EiM version.

You can download it from the usual place ***LINK*** .

I tried more than once in the morning and also a few minutes ago and always could access digital issues.
Probably not a server problem..

Thread: Building my own lathe
21/12/2012 23:00:42

Hello Siddley.

I found in an auction in a Portuguese site the following pictures of a lathe and the owner is asking as a starting value 500,00€. It will be sold for the best bid.
Don't know the maker but it looks to me as an English machine...

Don't know where in Spain you live but perhaps it's not too distant from Portugal to consider...

If you are interested please let me know and I'll send to you the URL address.

Best regards

Thread: DROs for an X2
20/12/2012 14:54:06

Hello Siddley,

Siddeley: Connectors from readout difficult to fit to scales and insecure.
There are a type of scales in the same range of values not suffering from this problem because the display is remote and the cable has only one connetor to connect to the display. I think they are called iGaging. See please ***LINK***
.
You can see here ***LINK*** the cable coming out beneath of the "cursor" box so the oil doesn't flow in by gravity.

Siddeley: Scales sometimes 'froze' and wouldn't start working again until the battery was removed and replaced
Never happened to me with these scales.

Siddeley: Update rate on the scales was very slow, it was neccessary to crank the wheels on the machine in a tortoise like fashion to avoid overshooting.
Never happened to me with these scales.

Siddeley: The 'off' button on the scales was really a 'standby' button and the battery was still being drained.
Not verified. So, no opinion.

Siddeley: General 'glitching' from display and from scales - blank readouts, refusal to zero.
Never happened to me with these scales.

Note 1: I have no connection to Arc Euro Trade
Note 2: Have you read my answer to your message I let in your personal mail box in the forum?

Thread: Chinese Lathe Accessories.
16/12/2012 23:34:18

Hello David Clark

Maybe it's because of my poor command of the English language but it seems to me I have recognized words I was taught to recognize as inappropriate language in one of the previous posts.
If I understood the words well, this type of uncivilized language makes me feel uncomfortable to participate and much worse if I, for whatever reason, have to disagree with John Stevenson.

If my understanding of English made me a prank, please Mr. Stevenson accept my apologies.

Maybe it's time for the moderator to intervene and at least remove the word to which I refer...

I remember that not long ago, in a similar situation, the moderator took some action...

Thread: Chinese Lathe Accessories.

Hello Ketan (and all the others).

I live in Portugal and
here I do not have access to most of the products related to the hobby that you can easily find there in England, as you probably know.
Reason why I have purchased from British companies like RDG Tools, Arc Euro Trade and Chronos some thousands of pounds of supplies and tools in the last four years having no reason to complain from any of those companies.

However, lathes and milling machines, for example, it makes
no sense to buy them in England, for reasons like support, shipping costs, etc..

So, when I wanted to buy a milling machine, I found a supplier here in Portugal and bought a mill from the Optimum Machines brand. Interestingly, when I searched for information on the source machine I was buying, I was informed that the company Optimum Machines (from Germany), has in China, Yangzhou, facilities dedicated to quality control of the products it purchases in China and knowing this has increased my confidence in the quality of the milling machine that I wanted to buy.
Do you think that this scheme helps to improve,
in general, the quality of products that the company sells?
Do you think that this scheme can make a difference to the quality?

After 5 years, I
must say I am very happy with the milling machine I bought from Optimum.

If you
are interested in confirm the information on the Optimum Machines premises in China, please see ***LINK***.

P.S.:
1 -
If some nuisance like the one reported by Alan Smith happened to me, that would be enough to break my trust and therefore I would no longer shop from that company. There are some items that I bought those companies, (e.g.: a collection of 21 ER25 collets), which I have not yet used, and it would be terrible if I found out, when use them first time, they have the wrong dimensions or are not concentric
.
There are some people on the forum who only spend money on the hobby.
There are some people who make money and also spend money on the hobby. Perhaps this explains, in some cases, the tolerance for imperfection of the products offered by the market ...

2 - I have no connection to the company Optimum.
3 – Please don't say I'm the "odd one" in the forum just because I don't think like you. I'm entitled to that and it doesn't guarantee you that I am wrong.
4 – Please be sympathetic to my poor English.

Best regards

Neil: the only shame is it doesn't include PDFs of all the old issues

Hello Kelvin. Good evening.

Using the free application ME_Indexes ***LINK*** and the double criteria “Leicester” and “Society” in the title field, I found there are two articles dated year 1912. They belong the category of “The editor's page”.
They are both from volume 27 and the issues are the 596 and 601.

I found three more articles that probably don't fit your purpose. Anyway I'll let the reference so you can discard them.

The first has the title: Revival of the Leicester Society of Model Engineers
The second has the title: New Rooms for the new Leicester Society of Model Engineers

Vol. 78 – issue 1929 – year 1938 – author: Percival Marshall and the title is: The Leicester Society's Exhibition
Vol. 78 – issue 1930 – year 1938 – author: E. Dallaston and the title is: The Leicester Society of Model Engineers Exhibition
Vol. 145 – issue 3620 – year 1979 – author: Laurie Lawrence and the title is: Leicester Society of Model Engineers Celebrate 70 Years with a Rally

Hello Nathan !

Mr. Philipe Orchard (the author of the data in my free application ME_index ***LINK*** ) sent a message to me, helping about your post in this thread. Here goes its content in the part concerning your quest:
I think he should look in Volume 159 on page 379 where he would find the second in a series of six articles entitled “Tricks of the Trade …..” by John Day. On the following page, 380, a Nathan Sharpe is mentioned just under the heading “About Milling Machines”.

The full series may be found at volume 158 pages 322 and 712, volume 159 pages 379 and 510, and volume 160 pages 26 and 224.

Hope this information still has some utility for you.
