Thread: kennedy hacksaw |

I bought one of these, brand new for about 120 pounds many years ago and without a doubt it was the biggest piece of crap I have ever owned. OK it worked as stated but so slow it was painful to watch. As soon as Graham Engineering started selling the 150 pound 6"x 4" I was there. That machine, in its day probably did more work than the lathe and mill at the time. I well remember 5 gallon drums with the top cut off filled with swarf from the saw. IIRC I sold the Kennedy for about ninety pounds to some unsuspecting punter. Somewhere there ought to be a shelf with examples of the crap we used to sell before we started moaning about imports Things like the Winfield lathe, the Poole lathe and let us not forget the Sooper Adapt |
Thread: Does anyone know how many small lathes are sold a year?? |
13/06/2017 08:09:08 |
The Myford one is easier to handle as there is a list of dates serial numbers on the lathes.uk Web site Mini lathes will be impossible as the title basically covers the C1, C2, and C3 and as well as Sieg making them there are other factories making the same or similar machines. Real Bull which is often mentioned actually went bump about 4/5 years ago but this spawned off 4 or 5 new suppliers, some of who use the real Bull name still. Grizzly or Harbor Freight [ can't remember which] has a standing order with Sieg for one 40 foot container per month. Never less but often more, depending on sales Edited By John Stevenson on 13/06/2017 08:09:47 |

3D printers use STL files so no problem. If you don't have a 3D printer then the project isn't for you and it's off down IKEA for you 😀 |

Nice idea Clive but not going to happen. Many are too comfortable in their armchair where they can duck behind the arm and take a swipe The Internet has made it so much easier than they days where you had to put pen to paper, then walk down to the post box. Never read many moaning posts in the old ME's did you? I'll bet that was because the editorial staff just binned them |

Take 12 people off this forum in any order. Give each of them a large cardboard box with submitted work and say a 2 month deadline to produce a magazine. Any guesses how many of the 12 issues we would see, on time, in that 12 month period. This is a serious question and requires an answer |

Thread: Oil coolant pumps - which type of pump |
11/06/2017 09:50:52 |
Jon, good post. Coolant flow has been the bane of my working life. Set it up at the start of a job, full tank and clean lathe but by the time you are well into a job with chips in the tray acting as a dam and half the Coolant out of the tank making its way back you have lost the head in the tank with the result that the flow is now down to a dribble. Open the flow up and eventually when the excess makes it back to the tank, you get drowned. |

If it cost ?880,000 and was made in Croatia that must be the whole of the GNP for the country down the drain |

That last remark is brilliant Clive and sums it up brilliantly As an aside I'm doing an article for Neil at the moment. It was actually started some years ago and has been a work in progress. I use Word and rely on the spell and grammar checker a lot. Recently I gave a copy to the Delectable Dr Debs who is also a Professor and has spent her working life in avionics research so report writing is a doddle to her and she also understands the subject. However when I got the article back, fully corrected for spelling and grammar it doesn't say what I want it to mean |

Thread: Loctite 603 from China |
10/06/2017 20:02:30 |
I use the high strength retainer off ARC. I use loads of this as all motor shift repairs and pressed loctited and also pinned. I prefer the smaller bottles as less waste in a busy shop where spillage is common and I can grab 6 or 10 bottles when I pop in as I literally do use that much |
Thread: ER collet chuck runout |

Touch that with a saw or grinders and no one is going to know you as you have messed with it. As regards trading standards you also don't stand a chance. They will have a maximum of 3 people to cover a whole county none of whom has a clue what a milling machine is and have more than they can handle just looking after fake CD's and market traders. Check out what I say before spouting the same old, post after post. |

Thread: Beware Melting Connectors on RAMPS boards |
08/06/2017 10:10:09 |
These are the same type of connector that leadshine have been fitting for years. When I was over in China at the Sieg CNC factory which has nothing to do with the manual machine factory, I noticed they used a gun, similar to a cheap cable splicer that fitted over the pins and gave the pin a toggle making it a harder push fit. We obtained one when over there or rather they got us one as they must be a commercial unit but not seen them anywhere else. Result being that when we do rebuilds or new conversions we have never had a problem. John Swift, I can positively say that the Tormach board is a dedicated board, designed in China and produced exclusively for Tormach. This board came about as the mill needs encoder input for rigid tapping and the lathe requires similar for threading. Non of the Western boards at that time could offer this and presently only the Pokeys57CNC can do this but only with Mach4 which after 6 years is still a work in progress. Typical design and should have a 3 part thrust bearing, plate, ball thrust and then a second plate, either side the bearing block. Just double check you have the order right and in the correct sequence of balls and grooves |
Thread: Cheaper Oxy acetylene source? |
02/06/2017 08:57:08 |
+1 for gas direct although I don't rent acetylene 1/2 size oxygen is ?4.25 rental pm ?7.00 to refill but ?10 delivery charge. I don't mind that as I can't get to Newark for a tenner. Full size MiG andTiG bottle's which incidentally are larger than BOC or AirProducts are ?5.00 rental They used to buy bulk gas from Air Lifquiede until Energas who is the UK agent, put the spoke in. They now buy direct from Italy, who also supplies Air Liquide so shows what a cartel the whole game is |
