It's an age thing Ady1, as an apprentice, I remember 'Mushet' steels. Needed 'Wimet' cutters and drills to machine. Regards Ian. |
Thread: Recycling old CDs |
14/01/2023 12:29:29 |
Plastic is Polycarbonate. Had numerous arguments with 'Jobsworths' at local recycling centre over what plastics are recyclable. If it melts when heat is applied it can be recycled. Whether recyclers can be bothered to segregate different types is another argument. Although local R/C used to have a separate bin for plastics, everything is now thrown into 'General Waste bin' Regards Ian. |
Thread: Slot Machines: How does a mechanical one arm bandit mechanism work? |
14/01/2023 12:19:23 |
I remember a 'Committee' man in a WMC rushing to switch off an electric bandit that decided to vomit far in excess of the Jackpot. Caused a bit of a shindig when challenged. Regards Ian. |

Thread: Laser cutter |
02/01/2023 11:37:20 |
Machines took over mass production centuries ago, the sequential control of operations came later. The humble 'Pole lathe' ensured mass production of legs, Chathams block making machinery ensured a lucrative Naval contract and the Springfield rifle works didn't do badly stock making. When Lasers first appeared, the statement used (same as Asbestos) was 'An answer looking for a problem' and lets not forget, Lasers don't ONLY cut. Regards Ian. |

Thread: I found this old car but what is it? |
31/12/2022 12:58:32 |
Basis of my special back in the late sixties. AKS (Alfa rip off) two seater fibre glass body. Low bonnet height meant a header tank for cooling, boiled regularly untill a 'Thames' radiator with two 'Kenlowe' fans behind it and a water pump solved the problem. Don't remember the chassis lightening holes but a cheap extra power trick, if you couldn't afford the 'Aquaplane' was to swap the 10 head for a 8 one on the E93A block and yes, the rod brakes were interesting. Regards Ian. Edited By Circlip on 31/12/2022 12:59:51 |
Thread: cutting a scroll inside a bush |

Thread: Cad software for dummies. |

Problem with drawing electronically is no matter which system you go for, there's a learning curve to become proficient. As one or two have suggested, there's always pencil and paper and how many bits can you get onto an A4 sheet? AND, don't forget, you can SCAN and save the results. You may not be drawing at full size but for simple parts, does it matter? Regards Ian. |
Thread: Using a small pointed iron to solder connections to relatively chunky electrical contacts |
12/12/2022 11:00:43 |
Errrrr, why not solder the wire to the switch FIRST with a gutsy iron and then the dainty connection to the Ardweeny? Regards Ian. |
Thread: NHS Fiasco |
12/12/2022 10:57:13 |
Have stopped trying to ring in to arrange a telephone consultation, despite the cost of petrol it's cheaper to drive to the surgery and arrange it over the counter than wait on the phone. Before the masses scream about the waste of money on PPI and contracts issued to 'Mates' due to the pandemic, they should be looking back to the decades of internal fraud. Perhaps an opertune time to repeat the series of TV programmes that highlighted the NHS internal investigation department. NO government is prepared to grasp the nettle and give it a d*mn good shaking, the bush would intertwine and protect itself. Wonder if we would then need to spend more on unemployment ?? Regards Ian

To anyone misinterpreting my initial posting as having a go at the Indians (NON racist remark) on the shop floor, read again. The service tendered by the medical staff, on the three occasions I've had to be admitted into Hospital can only be described as exemplary. Two were for non invasive treatment that a local GP could not have issued medication to cure but on one of these encounters it was discovered that I was going to need an urgent operation to insert a new piece of pipework (Triple A). On observation in recovery, It became blindingly obvious the amount of waste being generated. Sadly, if a thousand billion was 'Invested' into the NHS they would still be screaming for more. Regards Ian. |
