Thread: Mill Gearbox Lubrication and cutting oil
11/10/2011 21:35:57
I also have a version of the zx45. The recommened oil is a hydraulic 32 . it cost about £25 for 20l from our local engineering supplies shop. Do not use a heavy gear type oil.

Thread: Which Myford do I buy??
08/10/2011 08:58:22
Go for a late super 7, you will want to make sure it has the power cross feed and gearbox. Even better go and have a look at the boxfords and Colchesters, etc. Lots of lathes out there, cheaper than Myford.

Thread: Vice repair

Hi All
A few years ago there was in either ME or MEW an article on repairing a milling vice with bad drill holes. Any ideal on issue number?

Thread: Lathe and mill or combination
30/09/2011 18:23:32
NOOOOO. Stay away from combination manchines. I had a Chest Comet lathe with a mini mill mounted on the back. I soon bought a seperate base for the mill. The mini mill (X2) is ok only for light milling on small pieces. My had about 90 mm cross travel far to little. You need mass in a mill even more than you need it in a lathe.

Thread: Tig Welder

Hi windy
If you can gas weld you will have no problem using TIg. Sorry cannot suggest a set as I just used the set in the corner did'nt even look at the name. Very good set as i use to repair cylinder heads when i worked at Toyota Manufactoring.

Thread: Collet Chuck set.
27/09/2011 23:05:50
Hi Ed
I use the same collect chuck. The end of the cutter is ment to be supported by the point in the chuck body. What i normally do is screw in cutter is threaded end is just short of coming through the threads in collect. Insert collect in body so your Edge A is as inserted as far as it can. tighten up nut hand tight give the cutter a final turn then tighten nut with wrench. Does not have to be very very tight. The grub screw is to stop the shoulders on the collect rotating..

Thread: DRO on a Mill/Drill?
23/09/2011 21:48:12
Hi Paul
I will second the Shumatech DRO. I have been using the 350 for the last 5 or 6 years. Makes a vast difference to the useabilty if the mill. It has the centre find, circle bolt hole.

Thread: Proof reading, what proof reading ?
28/08/2011 19:24:32
Stewart, I dont know what age you are, but Iike most of us you are problly in the older half of the population. I also am very poor at spelling yet verbally and reading better than most. One of my sons is the same and the difference in support he is getting at school conparted to the none that I received is hugh.

Thread: Elliot 10M Shaper.
26/07/2011 17:48:37
Well, it is not cheap you will find cheaper. But then you say it is in very good condition and comes with a vice. I bought a Royal ( very similar) that needed some small work and a clean for £100. Have a look at Homework shop, there is a active shaper forum on there.

Thread: The perfect ME Lathe
18/07/2011 15:00:16
Geared head to noisy in home environment. No it is'nt. I run a Gearhead boxford and it is no more (and probley less) nosiy than a myford S7 i had. Added to which quick and easy speed change. D-13 camlock chuck. full gear box and large bore. The ideal lathe (for me ) a Boxford .

Thread: Steam Boat Ban
02/05/2011 00:46:01
The local club just want electric or sails on this pond no steam or petrol. There is a much bigger boating pond local which will allow steam and petrol but then you have to be a member of the club. This is my local boatings pond and it is just the club trying to have control.

Thread: Technical and engineering drawing.
18/04/2011 20:28:17
I trained with the MOD(N) in the drawing office and I sometimes stuggle with the drawings in ME and MEW. Yes to a series on reading drawings.
For some reason I find Mr Hall's drawings differcult .

Use the biggest end mill you got.
Thread: New or Second Hand Lathe?
21/02/2011 18:12:41
I have had new inports and second hand british. If you go down the second hand route , then there are many more makes than the over priced Myford. Consider the Boxfords belt and gear heads. Raglans and too many to list and cheaper than a smaller myford.

Thread: Bearing running clearance - rear axle
18/01/2011 21:13:58
Hi John
I am also building a little samson in 4 inch scale. From what I can gather any thing from it is best too loose than too tight. so I would use around 10 thou.  My bearings are currently to much on the tight side .

Hi Lara
You should get some good advice over on  Traction-Talk. I found the people there very helpful.

Thread: Parting off on Myford lathes
18/01/2011 16:14:46
Who cares, follow the advice of not much sticking out, and as solid as possable. I use flood coolant on steel when parting off and it makes a difference. Parting off yesterday 3 inch dia eccentrics. We know back tool posts work and that front mounted upside down works just as well. I moved from a inport 5 inch lathe to a newish British lathe again 5 inch swing and just part off front toolpost mounted right way up. This leads to to believe that the head bearings have a lot to do with it.

Thread: Warco V Chester

If the machines are broadly the same, I would go for the one you can vist in person. I am fairly close to Chester and being able to vist is sometimes better than relying on phones calls and the post.
