I take it you have removed the gib from the front of the saddle. |

It would help if the exact bore size of the spindle was posted. |

A lot depends on how much room you have to spare. And the maximum size of anything you can imagine making. |

I have used spray carburettor cleaner to get still sticky epoxy from my fingers. The brake cleaner is not so good. |

Be careful, getting one is one thing, but are the inserts proprietry? If so the prices and availability will be high and difficult. |

Try a length of 10mm studding down the spindle, it may fit without any modifications. When I converted the Tom Senior light vertical from MT2 to R8 it was easier to retain the top half of the spindle which had fine splines than to make one. The bore was intended for 3/8" Whitworth drawbars. I managed to get a 7/16" reamer through after silver soldering an extension to it. That is 11.11mm diameter. |

A bit mean with the postage, I have just bought a metre of 1" diameter 6086 aluminium for under £19 post paid. |

The bearings are not too bad, but as the replacements would not be very expensive and the spindle is out, I would treat it to new ones. Simply Bearings may have replacements which might be imperial sizes. Use lithium grease and leave plenty of space for the movement of the bearings to push the excess out of the way, overpacking is not a good idea. Clean out any rust and deburr the spindle when you clean it. When I did the spindle mod for the Tom Senior, the bottom taper roller was an SKF and the top one was a Timken. I had bought a Toyo bearing, but changed the design halfway through and it was the wrong size. Thread: Workshop Machines - How Big is Too Big? |
16/09/2022 20:27:48 |
A lot depends just how much help you can get. We were lucky when the museum was left the Alas 12 x 24 lathe and the Tom Senior light vertical. The lathe was removed from its stand and lowered onto a pallet using the car engine hoist from the museum. The mill was dismantled into pieces which could be lifted by two people and the parts put on pallets. We had also brought a pallet truck and masses of tools in the van which had a tail lift. We had to make two trips and as there was lots of domestic items that we couldn't manage, I advised the son to get in touch with a local charity who could do house clearances, which he didn't know about. |

I have never had bowel cancer screening invitations from my surgery, but direct from some other NHS source. Probably originating from the Southern Bowl Cancer Screening Hub at Guildford Surrey. |
15/09/2022 18:41:48 |
I have just passed the bowel cancer test, which simply tests for blood in the stools. I am 73 and the cut off date is 75. I will be over 75 when the next test is offered, but can opt in for further tests if I want to. I had slightly high, but not excessive figures for the PSA test back when I was 55 and had the tissue biopsy tests of about 12 samples from the prostate which had negative results. Since then, I have not heard any more about further tests. When I had the tests, I asked the doctor whether he had been tested and he replied "not bloody likely" which made me laugh. The DCMT 07 and DCGT 07 are a very good size for smaller machines and there are boring bars which also use them. |
Thread: Mill spindle runout |
14/09/2022 21:20:27 |
The upper bearing in a two bearing mill spindle has to be able to move to allow the preload to be adjusted. |
14/09/2022 20:00:46 |
Your latest figures are excellent, within 0.001" tir. That will be plenty good enough for home use. If the cutter shanks end up more than that, it may be possible to find the sweet spot between the spindle and collet holder by trying different positions and the one that gives the minimum runout can have alignment marks on the tooholder and spindle end. When you repack the washed bearings with lithium grease, leave at least 50% air space between the spindle and quill bore. The bearing preload is best adjusted until the spindle gets just warm after running fast for about 15 minutes, slacken the preload very slightly if it feels hot. Thread: Flintlock pistol, rifle. |
13/09/2022 21:24:23 |
When I was a member of a rifle and pistol club back in the 70's, one of the members brought along a muzzle loading pistol he had bought while on holiday in Spain, not old, but quite a good looking replica, around half inch bore. Nobody had any idea how much powder to use, so 2 measures of a .45 ACP cartridge case were used followed by a lead ball. To get a good view of the flash, the lights were dimmed and we all stood at about the 20 yard point of the 25 yard range. He fired the thing and there was a huge bang, lots of smoke and we never did find where the ball went. I think that was the only time that gun ever got fired. My cousin has a Martini Henry that he brought back from Nepal with cartridges, and he fired that. Looking at how thin the barrel is, you wouldn't get me firing the thing. The whole gun has been covered with that metal filigree beloved of that part of the world. Edited By old mart on 13/09/2022 21:29:29 |

Yes hoping it will as the Ps are not common as you say, being a small size it should have the least effect Probably cheaper to get a new holder than track down the P inserts if they won't fit I did find some of the P style inserts on ebay, most were prohibitively expensive, over £10 per insert, and there was a much smaller choice of grades than the common DCMT or DCGT style. I was concerned about their interchangability, as the tops would be the same size, but the base of the 11 degree angle type would be marginally smaller, and a lot depends on how accurately the pocket in the toolholder is made. Thread: Monel |
13/09/2022 14:42:40 |
Monel is used a lot for tubing as it is very ductile and corrosion proof. It it quite soft, so using sharp tooling will be required. Silver coinage is a similar cupro nickel alloy. |
Thread: Rivet gun nose apertures |
13/09/2022 14:36:06 |
With a pop rivet gun, don't use a nose that just accepts the rivet shanks, use the next size up. The grippers tend to leave a raised "knurl" on the shanks which will be hard to remove fron a close fitting bore. |
