Thread: Making a mill of it

I agree with Steviegtr, although that one at Wrexham is quite big, my attention was drawn to the others showing on the ebay page.

The throat depth would be easy to increase if necessary by having a spacer between the head and the bed.

Thread: Dry Moly Lubricant Spray

Sounds good to me, just be careful not to get the stuff on yourself, moly is dirty black stuff.

Casting babbit is only the start, how would you attach strong enough arms to the nuts?

Thread: 1 HP single Phase motor for mill

VFD's are only a small part of their inventory, after all you would expect more than just screws from Screwfix, wouldn't you?

Could you measure the pitch and size of the leadscrew? It might be possible to get a nut made and cut in half, then attached to the arms.

Thread: Which inspection borescope
26/09/2022 21:15:28

The Magnusson that I bought from Screwfix has a 2.3" screen, 640 x 480 and the 900mm long flexible probe is rated IP67. It has adjustable contrast, the picture can be rotated in 90 degree steps, adjustable lighting, from zero to very bright. The focus seems to be good from about 30mm which is twice lifesize on the screen. The flexible probe is stiff and would not move once secured, even 400mm from the tip. I would think that it is intended for use by an electrician. Unfortunately, it does not have a proper case.

I needed to use one and had one of the cheap USB which was usable, but packed up just when I really wanted it. I got one self contained one at Screwfix which has a 1 metre length and an 8mm diameter end. It was about £70. There is a similar unit al Lidl at the moment for about half that which I would have bought instead if it had been available at the time.

Ah, the Y movement does need a lot of thought. The knee would be smoother if the leadscrew could be fitted underneath on the centreline,or maybe behind the spindle running between the bed ways.

Thread: 1 HP single Phase motor for mill
26/09/2022 18:09:33

I just checked the Inverter Drive Supermarket prices for single phase motors of about 3/4 Kw and they are about £170 which is almost twice the price of 3 phase ones. So if an inverter was factored in, the price of going 3 phase is not quite so bad. That firm also have their own quick start guides for some of the inverters that they sell which makes it easy for those of us who are not electrical engineers to wire up and programme, including remote controls for speed and reversing if needed. The guides certainly render it uneccessary to run begging for help which is a regular occurrence on this forum.

I didn'trecognise it at first, just the name MYFORD. It shows promise for small work, just hope the purists don't get to see the pictures.

Thread: Sawing Plate
24/09/2022 21:17:46

The toolmakers at my old firm had a vertical bandsaw which was used for steel, aluminium, titanium, plastic and wood. All without any lubricant. The titanium was the favorite, especially when the apprentices were cut tooling lugs off it and the dust caught fire.

Maybe it's because a lot of the forum users don't check out all the website sub divisions. I had never heard of the Stevensen Trophy, although I now have and assume it is linked to the late great JS who is also remembered across the pond.

Thread: 3/8”/M10
24/09/2022 18:57:57

If you can ream to 9.8mm and then use a length of 10mm studding with a long nut loctited to the top you would be good to go.

Don't worry about the tinfoil hat, 95% of computer motherboards are made in China.

Thread: Levelling the mill - is it worth it?
23/09/2022 20:21:49

Having adjustable jacking screws is a great help to stop any rocking about, but its up to the individual whether to get it exactly level or not. Some mills are deliberately tilted to allow faster coolant draining. Both of the mills at the museum are fixed to the concrete floor using studding and chemical anchor resin. They are raised about 4" with wood and bolted. The relatively high centre of gravity is a factor, and they both are close, but not exactly level in either plane, so a cutter laid on the bed would not be in danger of rolling off. I have recently got one of those little square electronic levels to set things at an approximate angle. I do have adjustable angle plates with scales that have had their zero marks added by using a spirit level, I just matched the bubble deviation to that of the bed.

Thread: What thread
23/09/2022 20:05:00

I would also favor M1.4 x 0.3, it is common for the actual threads to mic undersize slightly which can be misleading.

Thread: Osborn Titanic (not Titanic II) Chuck conundrum.

Looking at the instructions posted by Richard shows what an improvement the Titanic II was. I use that type and if collets are needed, Posilock are identical to the Osborn.

Thread: cable core colours for 3 phase motors
19/09/2022 21:24:03

I just looked at the cable colours of 4 different makes of 3 phase motors on the Inverter Drive Supermarket website and they were all different. Only the tag codes were common, which is not much help, unfortunately.

Thread: Removing saddle from vintage Drummond lathe
19/09/2022 21:07:26

Great news, now if you can make a deep chamfer in the hole, you can fit a matching washer and a screw to hold it when it gets rebuilt.

I havejust realised that the nut os not for the cross slide, but offset to the right for a central leadscrew. Is there anything to keep the swarf off the leadscrew? Maybe a tube on the left of the saddle which just stops short of the left end of the gap?

Excellent result, how much did you have to remove?
