Whitworth fine ????? That,s a new one for me ! |
Thread: Gramophone Needles, British Made Too! |

In my experience, springs of any kind are like Mother-in-laws, and should be left well alone ! Both can be "difficult" to deal with, to put it mildly , each being very sharp ! |
Thread: 24V rectifier for lighting. |

Some time ago Lidl had Led lights for sale for less than 10Euros, I bought two of them for my lathe and mill. They came in two types, one with a base for table use, the other with a clamp for clipping to a shelf. The latter type is simple to fit to your lathe and the light is both bright and easy to focus. Like you, I had/have two of those horrible lights, now consigned to the dark corner of my cave. The Lidl lamps operate from a plug-in transformer, not a problem as I found, so, might be worth while looking out for them. Just a thought ! |

Thread: Are All Our Heritage Industries being Outsourced now |
10/08/2023 15:41:39 |
I recall reading a long time ago that Waterford never had the capacity to produce all the glass that was supposed to be made there and that much if it was made in East Europe. On the subject of UK going the same way as America, I suspect that,s already happening. Like here ,very few young people want to know anything about manual work, prefering instead to play with their "Smart" phones and "Tablets", meanwhile, other counties move in for the kill. Who can blame them ? |
Thread: I found this old car but what is it? |
08/08/2023 07:36:26 |
That poor old car seems to have been called many names, much like meself !! |
Thread: Stated thread depth never works for me. |
04/08/2023 08:11:36 |
I think Sparey mentions this problem on page 161 of his book. I came across something similar a while ago while making nuts for a friends trailer. I removed one of the other nuts, made a screw to match it, and then used that to test the new nuts. Worked out well. |
Thread: Casting and Machining a Hand Wheel |

And of course, any self-respecting home workshop would have Oxy equipment ! Most of use are lucky to have even a blowlamp. |
Thread: Denford pillar drill |

Just wondering, why do you want to separate them ? Could they not be cleaned up as they are ? |
Thread: Do you need an oil change with less than 10,000 miles in 10 years? |
21/07/2023 19:36:37 |
A can of oil is a lot cheaper than a new engine, and as someone said, short runs kill engines. I have put up 78000 miles since 2006, much of that in short runs, so I change the oil and filters every year, before my DOE test. Overkill ?, maybe, but the engine is still sweet.. Penny wise/pound foolish. |

Most of them will tell you to just "Go away" or words to that effect ! |
Thread: Old Briggs & Stratton sparks |

Ah, the Dreaded Honda !, seems to have put the skids under many an engine. |
Thread: A trip to the scrap yard |
18/07/2023 08:25:00 |
Around here, there is no way you would ever be allowed to wander around a scrapyard ! Not that there would be much of any use there anyway. Those happy days are long gone. I take it that Health inspectors are thin on the ground around there . |
Thread: Colour of Machines and Workshop Efficiency |
09/07/2023 17:26:59 |
Perhaps Mr Ford got it right when he said, "You can have any colour you like, as long as it,s black " I dont see why the colour should be an issue ,but I would prefer something easy on the eye Most of the old machines I ever saw were painted black, sure to get you off to a good start on a cold morning. My own lathe is painted a sand colour, which is easy enough to live with, not so keen on those red or blue, or green ones.. |
Thread: Soluble cutting oil just floating on water |
08/07/2023 14:06:48 |
Chances are that what you have is just engine oil. Soluble oil usually just mixes without any problem, and it,s not dear anyway. I would just dump whatever you have and buy a gallon of proper oil, which at 20 to 1 should last you a long time. |
Thread: Workshop Clock |
05/07/2023 08:43:51 |
I think Michael has it right, yet again ! It is well known that time flows at different rates, depending on where you are or what you are doing. Example ; School days were NEVER ENDING, while playtime passed in a flash. Later on, worktime went on for ever, holidays were gone in a jiffy. When I were a young lad [along time ago ], a year was never ending Now in my "mature" years, it seems to disappear in about two months. Some say this is due to the EEC, while others blame Brexit. Who knows ? it,s one of the great mysteries of our time. |
Thread: Time to call it a day |
04/07/2023 08:30:32 |
It,s all in the mind, Chris ! I too love collecting stuff, most of which I will never use, but it beats looking at TV ! |
03/07/2023 18:02:17 |
Hi Ramon, As I approached my 80,s, I thought much the same, but then I woke up ! 80 is the new 60, so dont pack in in just yet. I just switched to dealing with smaller lumps of junk, and taking longer to deal with it. No-one noticed ! Now at 84, I have been "advised" to pack it in. I say, "sure, come back and see me sometime, about 10 years time " The sound of a well tuned machine v the sound of a badly tuned wife, which is the winner ? Answers on a postage stamp, please ! Just switch to stuff you feel you can handle, but dont give up. |
Thread: My cruise |

Seem to remember that the White Star Line [of Titanic fame ], became the P and O line. Same attitude seems to have applied. How little changes ! |
