Thread: Good YouTube videos |
11/03/2023 20:28:11 |
Another YouTube channel I've become quite interested in recently is Cutting Edge Engineering, with an Australian chap called Curtis. Seems to be a one man band operation repairing heavy plant machinery, a lot of diggers, hydraulic cylinders and welding. Certainly not model engineering, but strangely fascinating to watch him work, he certainly knows his stuff. If you are easily offended, don't watch the out-takes at the end, as the language gets a bit strong! Rob |
Thread: Keyless Drill Chuck |
11/03/2023 15:03:03 |
Thanks Clive, I wasn't sure exactly what the OP was looking for. I'd been looking for a replacement chuck for my Milwaukee cordless drill as the original has some serious runout - from new! I'll remember the tip about not letting drills bottom out in proper keyless chucks, though Rob |

After looking at them as a result of another thread, it seems Ruwag stock KDCs for cordless drills, if that's the type you want. No arbor mounted ones, though. Rob |
Thread: Solid edge community edition download problems |

+1 on what Tricky says, if I am understanding the problem correctly. Somewhere along the line, things have got confused, possibly - likely - if there have been a number of failed attempts to installl SE. As others have mentioned, there may be rogue registry keys floating around. I can recommend CCleaner as a fairly simple way to perform registry cleanups - doesn't require any in-depth knowledge, and has never yet, for me, created any issues rsulting from its cleaning actions. Might be worth trying, there is a free version available. Rob |

Thread: Record number '0' Vice - 2 1/2" vice - Fibregrip Jaw covers. |

Thanks for the pointers, chaps, very useful. That looks like the correct material, Michael. Rob |
Thread: needing to make a 'small' number of forum posts before ad contact details are shown |

I suspect Julian is no longer around, as he started the thread over three years ago. However, we could hear more from Ian. Rob |
Thread: Dial indicator repair |
06/03/2023 21:48:48 |
I'd hazard a guess at the stickiness being on the plunger, rather than the internal mechanism. A bit of petrol or lighter fluid on the plunger whilst working it up and down may solve your problem. Rob |
Thread: Record number '0' Vice - 2 1/2" vice - Fibregrip Jaw covers. |
06/03/2023 21:45:32 |
Partial thread hi-jack, sorry! Where can one obtain the red fibre material in thicknesses suitable for vice jaws? All I've found is quite thin. I have some Draper soft jaws (aluminium extrusions) faced with a soft rubbery material that are pretty much useless, but could be refaced with fibre if I could find some thick enough, say 1/4". Thanks, Rob |

Edit - just realised the irony of using the word 'link' in this instance Possibly not working for Michael and Roy as they are not logged into Facebook? I don't know, but here's the picture from the link. Rob Edited By Grindstone Cowboy on 06/03/2023 09:18:39 |
Thread: Making a hole in my headstock. Good, bad or unnecessary? |

How about moving the name/data plates onto a piece of flat sheet and hinge it at the top, thus covering the hole and preserving the look of things? Rob |
Thread: changing a start stop car battery |
01/03/2023 19:31:39 |
Went with a friend to Kwik-Fit to get a new battery fitted to his 2015 Fiesta - basically followed in my car with jump-leads at the ready just in case, having used them at his home to start the car. Nothing special was done by them apart from taking the leads off the old one, swapping the batteries over and re-connecting the leads to the new one - I was watching the whole process. I'm not saying this is the best or approved method, but it's all they did and it seemed to work fine afterwards. His old battery had deteriorated to the point where the stop-start system had disabled itself some months before, but that started working again immediately after the new battery was fitted. Rob |
Thread: Removing masking tape |
01/03/2023 13:08:15 |
+1 on what Martin and Robert said above, also petrol works well - as long as it won't affect the surface you are removing it from. Cellulose thinners is not so great - understandably so, given the original intended use of the tape when car spraying. I've found that masking tape can be a b****r to remove if left for more than a day or two. Rob |

Posted by Nigel Graham 2 on 01/03/2023 08:14:09:. ......I tried to forward it to phishing@bt but it failed, not the first to do so..... If that's exactly what you put, it won't work (apologies if you've merely mis-typed it here). Use [email protected] or, as Michael said [email protected] Rob |
Thread: Boxford spindle thread type |
27/02/2023 22:17:18 |
Mine is Whitworth, but I believe some of the very early ones were 60 degree form due to it being based on a South Bend model. It's always made me wonder if some of the modern accessories - backplates, collet chucks, etc. - are truly 55 degree, or just a loose 60 and hope they fit. Rob |

Welcome Richard, lots of knowledgable folk on here, and it sounds like you may also be able to help some of us. Although making your 3 year old grandaughter do your laundry sounds a bit harsh Rob |
Thread: Which Loctite |
26/02/2023 22:08:39 |
Not an expert but, looking at the Henkel website, it appears 603 won't fill gaps larger than 0.15mm (638 covers 0.15 -0.25mm), 638 is stronger and resists slightly higher temps, but cures more quickly. 603 appears to be pretty much the same as 609. I'd go with 638 unless I needed longer to assemble the parts. Rob Baz types quicker than me Edited By Grindstone Cowboy on 26/02/2023 22:09:59 |

Just come across this conversation about sticky rubber parts on cameras. Not tried it yet, but will bear it in mind for the future. Rob Links to https://www.nikoncafe.com/threads/rubber-grips-on-slrs-gone-sticky.269937/ Links to https://www.303products.co.uk/shop/303-automotive-protectant/ |
Thread: Ignition capacitors |

Lots of different types available here. Links to **LINK** https://www.gsparkplug.com/ignition/condensers Edit - didn’t work as expected, doing this on a phone for the first time Edited By Grindstone Cowboy on 16/02/2023 13:48:58 |
16/02/2023 12:03:00 |
Happy to be corrected, but I'm not seeing the need for a very high voltage rating as the condensor is on the low voltage side of the coil? Appreciate that the inductance might cause things to spike higher than 12v though. Rob |
