Thread: Adept Articles
13/01/2023 12:28:46

Whilst on the subject of past ME articles, I have used the Archive.org records to view ME vol101, and am interested in going back into vol100 to see the earlier gear cutting articles by Duplex.

However, I can’t seem to get back further than vol 101, though I do already have a copy (screen photographed) of part 39 from June 16 1949, which doesn’t appear to be available …bu somehow I got to see it!

Can anyone enlighten me as to how to navigate this excellent, but rather stodgy and user unfriendly website?

Thanks

Mike

Further on the Adept lathe thread:

Does anyone have the M E Article dated 26th October 1944 by Geo. E. Sheard called “Toolboxes for small lathes”?

Also, can anyone tell me the specification of the Super Adept lead screw?

Mine is an ordinary one and I’m working in upgrading it to make it more useful.

Oddly, none of the info on lathes.co.uk mentions the lead screw diameters on either the carriage or the cross or top slides.

Does anyone have copies of any of the Adept lathe ‘development’ articles that appeared in ME between the 1920s & 1950s?

I have the article that appears in Lathes.co.uk by L.V.P. Clarke in the 17th July 1947 copy, but I am aware there are many others.

Can anyone help, please?

Thanks.

Happy New Year all!

I have an Adept ordinary lathe that I am upgrading as near to watchmaking quality as possible.

I have read the article from 1947 by L.V.P.Clarke, who did much the same, and used 50DP gears. I’m going to do things in metric, as I am a railway Modeller, so intend to use 0.5 module.

The problem is, I can’t work out what size the set of gear blanks has to be. I have Ivan Law’s Workshop practice book, but try as I might, I can’t find out what size to make each gear blank. I must be missing something important!!

Can anyone point me in the right direction, please?

I want to make a standard set:

20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 90 and 120 Teeth.

So - if one is making collets out of mild steel, and then case hardens them …. Is there any need to temper them?

after all BMS isn’t brittle, is it?

Gents

Thanks for your responses, and apologies for ‘senior moment’ repetition of the subject.
I hadn’t been able to access some of the previous suggestions, so had given up on the thread, but have now found the copy as advertised on Abebooks, so will progress down that route.

Further: I did try and discover whether ‘Ned’s’ article ever extended to the automatic chuck that was mentioned in the text as possible (back in the day) but I don’t think we ever found an answer to that query.

David: you’re a star!
Thanks again for the availability of your know-how!

It’s just that I’d like to read that particular text, really. I already have a book on the subject, but not actually the one mentioned… so I wondered if it was still obtainable, or accessible.

I’m fairly acquainted with Ian Bradley’s work, under the Duplex name, but I’ve not come across much of Edgar Westbury’s writings except the Capstan Attachment articles.

Rest assured I’ll be on the email again for tips and wrinkles, thanks again David!

I have been reading Edgar Westbury’s articles of 1942 on building the ‘ME Capstan Attachment for Small Lathes”, and came across this phrase on page 500 of the 21st May 1942 edition:

”Information on the design and operation of automatic indexing and locking gear was obtained from THE MODEL ENGINEER handbook, “Capstan and Turret Lathes”….”

Does anyone have such a publication? Or access to a copy?

Thread: Sieg Mill indexes and feedscrews
08/08/2021 13:06:50

Thanks.

what about the pitch of the feedscrews? And the apparently conflicting information of the index increments being 0.025?

Surely they should be 0.1 increments?

Mike

07/08/2021 10:37:27

Morning all

could anyone tell me what increments are used on Sieg X1 mill X and Y table feed screws?

From what I’ve seen, it looks like the dials are marked in .1mm divisions, but it looks like they’re stated on a plate to be 0.025?

Can anyone please confirm what thread the feed screw is and what the actual measurements are on the dials?

Thanks

Can anybody help?

I have a Sieg Baby lathe that is a few years old, but hardly used. I’ve been about to set about cleaning it up for restoration but it won’t switch on!

I have a Sieg X1 mill/drill, so am familiar with the switching on order. Power is indicated, but it won’t turn on with the speed switch.

Any ideas anyone?

Thread: Small drill honing jig
06/06/2021 16:22:24

A further question re Derek Brown’s 2 articles (thanks for them, Gents!)

Having read the 1994 initial articles about his device to sharpen small drills, it all seemed very simple - though I have to say a bit terrifying to drill 1.24” into 9/64” silver steel to make the collets with nos.55 & 68 drills!!

I then read the later 1996 revision …. and notice an upward extension of the sizes …. But he now talks of a larger capacity - up to 1/4” / 6mm, and larger block.

Fine … but am I missing something? Do both systems work together? Does version 2 now have the tiny scary collets as well as the 1/4”, 3/16” & 1/8” multi size ones?? I’m confused!!

Can anyone clarify please?

Gary Wooding - your version seems to avoid the confusion…. If I’m not further confused!!

Thanks all for the suggestions.

The little gadget shown is intriguing, Speedy builder! The first time I’ve seen that one.
Did you build it? If so, did you make it to drawings?

Suggest you get a copy of the book by Railway Modelling livery tutor Ian Rathbone “A Modeller's Handbook of Painting and Lining”. It’s applicable to all scales.

There is also a DVD, which is a little harder to come by than it used to be - under the Wrightlines label.

it has been uploaded to YouTube by someone under the search heading of “Lining out an Andrew Barclay saddle tank for my model railway”

from 1: 31: 37 to 3: 11: 34.

Forget the preceding & succeeding meandering by Tony Wright.

I’ve been on a Missenden Abbey course tutored by Ian. Excellent!
