Hi Roni welcome to the forum. It looks like there are is a lack of members in the north of London with a surface grinder. You have it sounds like a great mill, wish I had the use of such a machine as I had use of some Hass CNC mills before retirement.

Thread: What is this used for
15/11/2022 20:42:54

I used to make sheet feeders for metal box company and there were a few of these on each unit. The pre printed sheets were stacked on the feeder, paint side down, and the top sheet was picked up with vacuum suckers and lifted forward between the magnets to stop the paintwork being scratched into the press tool to make a box or tray etc.

Thread: Central heating pump bearing replacement
07/11/2022 07:36:41

This was the pipework just below the pump. The two pipes were the fill and expansion pipes and the elbow was about a foot below the pump. Apparently thus is the place where blockages happen if anywhere. The pipe was 22mm dia .

Thread: Central heating pump bearing replacement
06/11/2022 17:34:30

I had an original Danfos central heating pump which was at least 20 years old and as I was having a new condensing boiler fitted told the plumber to fit a new pump. The boiler had to have a magnetic filter fitted to have the 7 year warranty and thought that was that for a long time. The pump started vibrating and was noisy after about 6 months and on strip down it was found to have foreign material in the vains of the impeller. The original had a simple open impeller but the new super pump has a slot type impeller which has slots which taper as the slot gets thinner to the outlet. The impeller was partially blocked and out of ballance which made the pump vibrate. I tried to buy an old style pump but they were not available. It was also found that the original pipe work was firstly used by a coal fired back boiler, before my time, and the pipework was filled with solid like iron deposits like a coating. It took various descale and chemical cleaners over about 6 months to we think to rectify that problem and yet again another pump change as a seal was leaking.

If you want the table actually ground it would need to be done by a company which needs to know what they are doing, on a grinder which is suitable to do the job, and large enough to cover the area which needs grinding in one pass accurately. I use an India double sided stone, similar used to sharpen chisels, run over my beds etc to check for any damage ie damage caused by dropped item or swarf trapped under a clamped jig of vice etc but using oil and the fine side only.

I have the smaller Chester 16VS mill which i have moded by fitting a ball screw Z axis with power feed and a M-DRO read out on three axis. These make a huge difference to my mill especially doing hole centers, boring deep bores and repeatable parts etc.

Hi Taf I have downloaded the handbook and it looks like the colum is bolted go the base casting and I wondered if there is a problem there. Has it been strained moving it, are the bolts tight or has it been shimed in the past. I would start there. I may also suggest looking at the fittings between the headstock and column and head casting as there could be some damage there as well to the round T bolts and slot.

Thread: Yet another scam
29/10/2022 16:11:17

I have just had a warning from Nottinghamshire trading standards about another scam to get you to download a file to let scammers onto your identity etc. see message below.

Trading Standards are aware of counterfeit Microsoft products being posted out to people. They are designed to appear like Microsoft Office products to defraud residents.

The packages are manufactured to a convincing standard and contain an engraved USB drive, alongside a product key. However, the USB does not install any software when plugged in to a computer. Instead, the device contains malicious software which encourages the victim to call a fake support line. During the call, the instructions given allow the criminals to have access to the computer.

Trading Standards suggests being suspicious of any packages that are delivered that you have not ordered or requested.

Please contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133 if you require further advice or to bring a matter to the attention of Trading Standards.

As part of a set of wax die moulds for RR I was the bench person involved in finishing them for delivery. The largest produced a cone like piece about 12 inch diamiter and 8 inch long with a section of about 1/4 inch thickness the tool was a cube shape with a cone machined in one end and a side plate with a smaller cone to make the part thickness. The side plate was held in place by 4 swing bolts 1/2 inch UNC and about 6 inch long with nuts made to fit. The swing bolts were made from high tensile steel I think EN 16 T but the apprentice making them used wrong thread firstly and helped himself to some EN 1A to remake them without telling anyone. The result was the die opened under pressure with molten wax spraying out the first time it was used. The operator was slightly burnt and there was an investigation when the steel was found to be incorrect but the faulty parts made with wrong thread were found.

Thread: Welding course
23/10/2022 13:29:47

Our local tech collage has a new mechanical center with loads of new kit. A car training center, welding, machining with lathes and milling both manual and CNC, design center with CAD - CAM drawing and programing, plumbing and general building with its own computer design center. Why not use the new welding center with multiple sets of TIG, MIG, STICK and gas.
