Thread: LED light with magnetic base for milling machine |
03/02/2023 11:11:41 |
I made a lamp from a strong magnetic base, a goosneck microphone flexible stem and made my own lamp from some aly tube and bits from scrap bin. I fitted an LED lamp and holder from local supplier. The only problem is the swarf sticks to the magnet and in turn some damage to the paint on the mill head where I move it about. David |
Thread: Slow Speed Grinder? |
03/02/2023 08:14:21 |
I bought a Taylor Hobson cutter grinder for very little and made an adjustable tool rest to replace the original cutter holder. It has a diamond wheel for carbide tooling and a white aloxite cup wheel I use on HSS tools. David

Thread: Squeezing copper tube? |

I had a similar problem with our system. It seems that our system is an old system was originally a parkway coal fired system which had been upgraded to a gas fired Baxy Bermuda back boiler which we inherited. I had a Baxy condensing boiler installed to replace the Baxy and before it was installed a very strong system cleaner was run first for a few weeks. The boiler was installed in the loft next to the original pump and hot water cylinder. It ran ok for a while but i had the same ptoblems as you describe but the instaler couldn't fathom it and called the Baxy engineer who said it was s partial pipe blockage between the boiler and pump. The installer removed that section of pipework and he couldn't believe what he found. The old pipework it seems had at least 2mm a side coating inside which where he had cut into the old pipe it had dislodged and where the pipework had an elbow to the pump was blocked. The whole section was replaced and since we have had no problems.

Try these for 25 x 50 https://www.mkmplastics.com/shop/plastic-square-tubing No connection but it seems expensive. £340.50 for 25 3mtr lengths. David |
Thread: Using a Morse taper reamer - advice please |
27/01/2023 20:51:51 |
I recently made a new tailstock quill and the only way to guarantee it to run true was to bore it with the top slide set at the correct angle, supported by the fixed steady and then finnishing it with a Morse taper ream.

Thread: Angle grinder stand usage |
24/01/2023 06:38:39 |
Hi Chris a picture of the grinder and stand would help but I think you should use it like a bench grinder with a suport on center height. That way the grinding force is going downwards and you can have the support either side of the wheel as well which will suport the part you are grinding as you push if backwards. |
Thread: Steady Rest principles. |
19/01/2023 06:53:48 |
Hi Samuel you don't say what lathe you are working on and what steady you would like to make. I think you are looking at a fixed steady and i prefer cast iron as it has good stability. My steady for my Myford M Type has a cast iron body with screws with phosphor bronze tips to prevent wear and damage to the job you are turning. Aluminium is too light for a steady in my thinking but I have seen steel ones which were fabricated and very stable. There are possibly very large loads on a steady like, I somtimes put a long bar in my lathe and part off a length when the bar will not go down the spindle. David |
Thread: AC current measurement device |
18/01/2023 07:31:52 |
I have a clamp meter which I had to have for work a while ago. To use it for single phase I made a short extension cable with three single flex cables and that way it could check the current in the live conductor and check the earth is not. David |
Thread: Lapping a Unimat 3-jaw chuck |
18/01/2023 07:22:15 |
Hi Julius I bought a chuck with the jaws out by 0.020" and that ground very well using the clover leaf plate and toolpost grinder and after over a year still grip true within a thou. I also ground the outside of the jaws by using a couple of rings on the outside of each step whilst I ground the other step. https://youtu.be/2VKR45MYVEw David

Thread: Removing a stuck chuck. |
15/01/2023 13:43:32 |
On my lathe I have a notch for a C spanner which if hit with a small mallet removes the Chuck. As it is in the back plate it dosn't alter the chuck which a spanner on a jaw or on a piece of hex bar can if as like my chuck it is screwed on with 6mm screws. No load on the screws just directly on to back plate and less leverage on the spindle. Do not in any way use the back gear as the gears will be damaged. Just hold the spindle pully etc and a sharp tap on the C spanner will get it free. David

Thread: Your memories of Live Steam please. |

I and a school friend Michael about 13 year old, used to sit at local small station, train spoting, which only had goods delivery and no passenger service except for special trips etc. We were on summer holiday and an engine used to come through to collect wagons of coal from your local colliery and take them to a local concentration sidings now long gone. Anyway on one trip he slowed down and shouted would we like to have a ride and we didn't need a second asking. We jumped at the chance and he showed us to drive and fire the engine and made a few runs with collected trucks from local colliery to concentration sidings. We did this for a few days and after a few days were taking a packed lunch and doing most of the work with just either the fireman or Ray the driver to watch us whilst the other was in the guards van with the shunter drinking tea. We spent a couple of weeks like this only to having to stop when a trial, a new diesel loco engine began on the track we were on, with inspectors and trainers on board. We were great friends with the driver and wife who met our family's and were long time friends. David

Thread: Recycling HDPE |

We have been asked by are local council for recycling milk bottles to squash the bottles flat, to make more space in the bin, not air, and replace the tops as now all tops are the same material and colour as the bottle. No coloured tops in all local supermarkets around here. David |

Are they formers for making copper ends for steam engine parts made by spinning and shaping on a lathe. I have made the ends of a boiler with a similar shape but just held in a chuck. David |
