We have also done the top and bottom cylinder covers (what a joy a PCD function is on a milling machine!)

I too bought a set of Chinese telescopic bore gauges and found them horrible. They came in a blue plastic wallet thingy (on Banggood). I have thrown them away and bought a second hand set of Mitutoyo's on Ebay.

We have been whittling away at the Stuart and are getting there. We have completed the steam chest and cylinder.

Looks beautiful, well done. Is the shank tapered?

I had never heard of a tether car either and was amazed by what I saw after Googling them!

What about a Kentucky-do-nothing?

Roger,

David Hawthornthwaite made an excellent maintenance booklet for the S7, describing where to oil and how often to oil. I printed it out and had it plasticized and keep it near the lathe.

If you Google “Myford Super 7 maintenance” you’ll find it on his website.

Loving this build thread immensely. As an alternative to holding your milling cutters in a collet you can also buy end mill holders from Arc which have fixed sizes. I have 2 ready to go with cutters in them 6mm and 10mm, being 2 sizes I use often.

I am amazed to think you are designing a gearbox, i only vaguely undertand them! looking forward to seeing the progress, do you plan to take any phtotos to share with us?

Shaun, watch Geoffrey Crokers’s most excellent youtube channel where he restored an ML-7 to what looks like almost new. Most rewarding to watch. With some effort and advice for which this forum is the best place to be your ML-7 will be fitting fit again!

Here are some more build pics. It was challenging getting through that hard layer in the casting.

I can't rotate the photo's sorry. I'm still not sure how or why they end up turned 90 degrees.

We have been steadily chipping away at the Stuart. We got the cylinder honed and both cylinder covers done. We also got the crankshaft pinned.

Overal glad with the progress, no major snags except one which was quite a biggie. Whilst turning the cylinder on the rotary table I was distracted by the neighbour who popped into the garage to see how we were getting on. After he left I got back to the mill and promptly turned the x-axis handwheel instead of the rotary table handwheel! Gave it a good old yank too so the cutter plunged into the cylinder by 0.5mm so to clean it up we reduced the overal diameter of the cylinder to match the notch I'd just cut. Very frustrating!

John, that is a beautiful No. 1 and as already said a welcome change in colours. Well done, I know how much work goes into making a running No. 1 as I am experiencing myself.

If you decide to make them yourself, here are the dimensions you require. You’ll have to scroll down 3 or 4 posts to see the drawing. I think thats valid for both ML7 and S7 lathes.

Mick, I bought mine second hand and yes it still works but I am bery gentle with it and having to screw it closed to get it in the box makes me cringe every time. I think I’ll take Jan B’s advice and construct a new case.

I need a box like that! Haha exactly what I was referring to,

I’m sure we all have one and mine regards to my favourite Mitutoyo micrometer. It only fits in the box when the anvils are nearly touching. And it’s one of those old Mitutoyo’s with the mechanical numerical wheels so every time I have to store it I worry about the wear and tear to that rather intricate bit of kit.

Why didn’t they design the box so that the thing would fit with the thimble “extended”?
