Rotate head 90deg and either mount the work to suit or end milling becomes side milling if that's OK. .

If they dont have a centre hole and flat topped TPUN, if they have a chipbreaker ridge TPMR.

Sizes should be all metric

Thread: stainless steel valves in cast iron guide

I'll see if some extra clearance solves it first. If it doesn't then yes, I'll have to shell out for a one off valve. Thing is, other people are buying these valves presumably and I've never heard of anyone having problems with them.

Thing is how many 'other people' actually ride the bikes to find out the shiney new valve is only that and not much of a valve at all. You may be the only one in a sea of trailer queens.

17/02/2023 16:19:20

I confess that I have no idea how valve springs on the outside of the engine survive with all the dust and rain that can get thrown at them.

Might there be a small weep hole now blocked by the new guide? Or are you supposed to oil up everything steam engine style before you start it.

I don't think the internal error code on the display unit can be caused by the scales being faulty or not connected. From your connector pinout it looks like the sales are pretty standard quadrature scales with the "R" signal being for a pulse which is generated as a reference point near one end of the scale travel. The "A" and "B" signals will be the quadrature outputs. As these signals are not at any fixed value the display unit has now way to know if the scales are faulty. Your scales are single ended output. If they were differential output they would have A+ and A-, B+ and B- and R+ and R-. As the scales are supplied with 5 volts the logic levels will be 0 and 5 volts. (These signal levels are often called TTL levels.) With power to the scales if you look at the "A" or the "B" signals with an oscilloscope you should see them changing state as the scales are moved. You will also need to know how many pulses per mm of movement that your scales provide. This can noemally be set with a setup function on the display unit. If you try to get into the setup function of your display then you may be able to see what the pulses per mm setting has been set to.I agree that Machine DRO will be able to tell you if their display units are compatible with your scales

Les.

Les,

The fault is a failed display startup self test both with and without the scales being fitted.

He's trying to match a new display to his existing scales

And also I want to detach that add-on box in the bottom left corner. Inside it is the 3 phase converter and it doesn't belong to the lathe. Also the converter has active cooling and sitting inside an closed box is not a good idea.

However the converter also has exposed screw terminals at mains voltage that need to be protected from fingers, swarf, fluid and mice etc

Didn't the cap sit on the moveable contact plate and the lug on the dizzy body? Otherwise you have a lot more dismantling before you can get at the bob weights

John -

The camera there being by far the lesser offence, more likely.

Perhaps this is becoming an increasingly grey area though due to the proliferation of camera phones, security videos, and vehicle cameras; with the Police now frequently requesting images of offences or accidents taking place.

Ian -

I missed that programme, What did Mr. Taylor find about the Liberian?

Nigel it's available on the BBC web site to watch.

Thread: clarke tungsten tap & die
14/02/2023 18:51:54

These sets can be aimed more at repairing damaged threads than creating new ones. The metric set with the same 'create and repair' use description are all finishing taps.

Just don't get the sets sold at markets, you get drills that can't cut mild steel etc

Harrys vintage link implies 1970's so maybe 50 year old plastic, I know I was in better nick back then than now.

You could weld 2 singles together to get the right screw spacing, but you will probably still get get gaps at the four corners.

Thread: Can you identify this mill?
09/02/2023 11:37:02

No castings, just steel slabs welded together, the column is fully welded on the edges as if the knee. Shame the head has no visible dovetail mounting. Strictly speaking shop built with heavy duty work help on the night shift. Nudge nudge.

Not sure what the telephone connector box is for, but I wouldn't be putting mains through it.

It will tram as the head nods.

The lack of a quill doesn't seem to detract from a lot of the Centec's loose in the world. If you look the head might be on a short dovetail with 4 socket screws on the left side, the equally it might be flat clamp.

The crosslide travel needs to be confirmed. if you can't travel a cutter over the full width of the bed without moving the head that's a little more serious than a missing quill.

Don't pay too much

A beautiful old engine with a remarkable history. Sad that it is being sold off so the hall can be used as a "cutting edge centre for well-being" by yuppie twits. But as they say, it is not original to that location so hopefully it will find a good home where it can be appreciated.

Well it is Brighton & Hove where 95% of yuppie twits live and return the only Green Party MP in the country. Why would they want a dirty, oily, smelly steam engine?

Thread: Mild Steel, What do I use?
06/02/2023 10:59:22

Hi Martin,

Your 20kg pack will be EN3, machines well with Aluminium ##GT inserts which are very sharp.

En1A machines much better with hss, the down side being an increased tendency to rust.

Round BMS is only round-ish though it is rounder than Black.

I cheat and use ground round steel for shafting of any length.

Rapid Metals are modeller friendly especially if you call in when you can check out the off cuts bin. They also due postal.
