Thread: Amadeal Lathe failed - customer service appalling!
14/03/2020 10:41:18

Regardless of any T&C's or guarantee, an item sold in the UK must be fit for purpose and suitable quality. Limiting the guarantee on elecrical components to 6 month's is unreasonable. most electronic components do not wear out and should last much longer than a year.

Robert G8RPI.

An accurate but pointless argument as there will always be unscrupulous sellers taking advantage of the culpably unwise people seeking unreasonably cheap products by sourcing cheaply and supporting inadequately, the fact that the customer has recourse in law will not change the fact that their money spends significant time invested in scrap as a direct result of them being cheap in the first place.
Why do so many people act all surprised when, having scraped the bottom of the barrel and found one of the cheapest box-shipping options to buy, they get cheaply assembled products and less than stellar service?

Thread: Toolpost question

I looked at Multi-Fix and found that almost none of the angles I wanted to set tools at were catered for by the 9 degree increments.

How complex is the turning you want to achieve?
I've done some turning in the mill with turning tools held in a milling vice.

Thread: metric thread on my imperial lathe

Whatever you do, do not open the lead-screw half-nuts under any circumstances between passes.

While good advice for a beginner, that is not entirely true. There are several vids on utoob which clearly demonstrate that the half buts can be opened - but must be closed again before reversing beyond the end of the cut.

Unnecessary for braked lathes or where plenty of undercut is available after the thread, but useful for instances where things are 'limited' in some way.

Cut away from the shoulder and outwards from the bottom of a bore and these issues are non-issues.
From personal experience, and not from watching YouTube videos, it's easier not to open the half nuts when cutting Metric threads on an Imperial lathe wink

I stand by what I said, please don't edit what I said to suit your case.
While guidance is that there will normally not be any action without intent, the lettter of the law does not require it. The law (Theft act 1968) also says that possesion of an item made or adapted for burglary or theft is considered intent on it's own. Obviously the case of one in your car depends on you being in or near the car and not at home.
The point of the wording of this law is that it's does not need proof of intent, if it did it would be too hard to enforce. It's basically up to you to show reasonable cause for having the item.
Hopefully it is applied with reason, but you could end up on the wrong side. Try not to fail the "attitude test" for startrers. Finally it's not the police who decide what is an offence or who is guilty.

Robert G8RPI.

Complete and utter bunk, if you have no previous and are of good character you need have no fear in carrying anything which isn't illegal in itself, no one will be interested.

Thread: 3D Scanning, Anyone?
09/02/2020 21:32:30

Is anyone using a 3D scanner to capture parts for 3D printing projects?

Thread: Linked belt for Myford 7
08/02/2020 08:23:22

I've tried various linked belts and all of them require greater tension than a conventional belt to transmit the same power on my Super 7, fine for industrial machinery but possibly not optimal for the long term health of the plain bearings on a Myford.
I do regularly make use of the full 1hp available to me though so anyone performing only light work may never have any issues.

... Small lathes do not need power cross feeds, its a fad rather than an essential, learn to twiddell the feed handle at a constant rate.

I tend to agree with this but isn't one of the advantages of hand feed that the rate can be varied eg as in facing to centre?

Better still is a VFD to increase the rpm as the cut radius decreases, with a little ingenuity an easily built linkage can be produced to actuate a speed varying potentiometer.

02/02/2020 17:09:52

Anyone who hasn't owned and used a Long Bed might think it's just a longer version of the same thing but they'd be dead wrong, the Long Bed is a much deeper and far more rigid casting, I don't have any of the rigidity issues which are generally talked about in conjunction with Myford 7 series lathes, parting 30mm stainless is a breeze.

Thread: Health Risks with Filament Printing
27/01/2020 23:41:14

The only reason you might not know this already is if you were not interested enough to read around the subject in the first place, this is not news, I was reading warnings about ventilation 4 years ago when I first researched 3D printing.

Thread: Drilling hardened steel
27/01/2020 23:20:27

Make a steel guide bush and clamp it in place to guide a 4 flute carbide endmill, your pillar drill will easily accomplish this.
A brass guide bush would probably be fine for a one-off.
Note that I am speaking from commercial experience here, not speculation or theory.

Thread: 3mm drill hole too tight for 3mm bar

You can sharpen one drill flute manually with a stone to give the tip slightly asymmetric geometry, this will then drill a slightly larger hole than a symmetrical grind.

Just my thoughts but you can't sensibly machine anything massive with an ER32 chuck and they do slip,

What torque are you tightening to?
I never had an ER collet slip after I looked up the correct tightening torques.

Thread: Tapping a nylon hole.

I machine tap Nylon with spiral flute taps, the threads have enough resistance not to shake loose but are not difficult to tighten.
