Holding block for ISO 30 shank

Having seen the hexagonal holding blocks for Straight shanks (using ER collets) that then allow clamping in a vice or a 3-jaw chuck for machining the face, I am wondering if there are similar holding blocks for an ISO 30 shank so one can machine the face of an ISO 30 arbor in a lathe. I have been searching without success....any directions much appreciated.

Never seen one. Assuming this is a one off clean up of the face on an ISO30 arbor for a mill simply put the arbor in the mill and clean up with a lathe tool clamped to the table.

How complex is the turning you want to achieve?
I've done some turning in the mill with turning tools held in a milling vice.

Thanks Andrew - no it is a machining process that requires profiling, drilling, tapping and finally milling indents off-centre. Ideally I would like a hexagonal block that holds it in a lathe chuck and then can be moved to a milling machine vice for off-centre indents.

I agree it would be possible (though less easy) to do the profiling, drilling , tapping while in the milling spindle but the off-centre indents would need to be milled when mounted in a vice.

Depends what the OP means by "face", but no good for machining the face of the flange on DIN 2080 or QC30 holders to reduce the thickness to make them work with Erikson Quick Change flange clamping nuts, as machines fitted with that type of clamping often have solid spindles & no provision for a drawbar. Erikson recommended mounting the toolholders between centres & grinding the flange face to suit.

Kennametal have a TF30 which looks like it would do the job, but not found one used in the UK, and would like something sub-£100 otherwise I'd rather make one myself. The TF30 is £202 +VAT new in the UK!

I did start on making an MT4 to BT30 adapter for my big-bore S7. It should be relatively easy to make something given a suitably sized chunk of hex stock?

If it is only for indexing, can you use the hexagon ER block and grip the narrow parallel part of the 30 taper where the drawbar goes? The challenge then is secure clamping when milling.

Can you not take two packing blocks and rest the flange on those, clamp it down onto the packers, locate ctr , drill, tap and then mill your features at whatever offsets you need. Just the profile in the mill spindle.

Adam,

Depending upon the machining loads involved in your 'second operations' it may suffice to have just a short taper at the opening of a plain bore ... with a suitable plug at the tail-end, to align the drawbar.

Michael thanks - I think that's a fair idea but really I am better off just buying a short bit of hex bar 2.76" AF and boring an ISO30 female taper into it on the lathe, and then machine the face on the mill to leave a pair of permanent dogs.
