David, You could of course connect a small remote control station and mount that in any convenient position or have it on a swing arm ala DRO read-outs. I mounted the remote on the front of my BH600G and the common VFD unit, used for the Tom Senior and Marlow mills, inside a plastic enclosure fixed to a loose arm hung from my Overhead Crane Rail. Darn you MichaelG You are now responsible for me being side-tracked again!

Any thoughts on making the tweezer/pliers?

Agree with you JS. Had this type of jobsworth when our council introduced wheely bins and I asked the young 20 something girl if my elderly Mother could leave the normal bin bag out. Her response floored me "Oh no, H&S prevents the bin men from lifting and throwing them into the cart!" ff anyone starts quoting EU law, I would demand to be shown the original, not the one our councils interpret in a way that they can add stuff to to justify their budgets or existence. Has anyone ever done so I? No doubt the result could be as JS predicted - intimidation. I get my Bolchy attitude towards authority from my dear departed Mother. Geoff - I'm docile in comparison |

Les & Bazyle, Thanks for the suggestions. Fitted the Threading Dial and that prevented the RH tapped hole from being used as it wouldn't allow the Remote Control Station (RCS) from being swivelled into a more useful position to operate the switches. I had already drilled one hole in the RCS some time ago, so just measured up and drilled a corresponding one in the cover in order to pass an Allen key through, and into the cap screw head. This works a treat, and can be tightened up so preventing the RCS from swivelling, now that only that one fastener is used. Used TouchDraw to do the label, emailed it to myself then printed it out at 30%. Just need to make a permanent label, with thanks to and as per 'mikesworkshop'. Geoff - This last bit took less time than is my norm. |

Thanks guys So it's the Glut that holds the key. What about lubrication for the Sliding Shaft? Surprising and annoying when ones brain cells stall and refuse to do ones bidding, especially when trying to solve a problem. Geoff - Grey matter can now go into recovery mode |

Ady1, How did she get away with imposing such utter nonsense? I would have told her and the Council to get knotted in proper Anglo-Saxon! "See you in court" would have been my comment as she went of in a huff to 'report' me. As stated, it's the officious oafs/baboons/jobsworth who have given H&S a bad name. pgk pkg, Thanks for the quick response. Didn't make myself clear unfortunately. Headache is my excuse I do get the operation of the lever and how it moves the props via the 'Sliding Shaft', but not how the 'glut/sliding sleeve' allows the 'Sliding Shaft' to slide inside the revolving outer/drive shaft but not spin as well. That pin seems to put a spanner in the works. Sometimes the obvious are not so obvious as on this occasion no doubt. On occasion the old grey matter steadfastly refuse to do their designed duty. An end view drawing would no doubt solve the mystery, but I just cannot be @rsed to make one right now. Geoff - Need to study the helio mechanism, and something I didn't think off. Norman, I gave up in 1989 and have never regretted it, and have absolutely no intention of starting again. The price of a pack now is mind blowing. Did an exercise, some years ago to see what I'd saved, and it stunned me as it paid for most of the equipment in the Workshop. No wonder Food Banks are needed. Geoff - Smuggling and cross Channel shopping are here to stay.

As stated in a post in one of my threads, ME ontains a wealth of interesting and useful information as I found out last night. Issue 1122 featured this mechanism.
Now understanding how the prop end works is not a problem, but for the life of me I just cannot get my head round how the actuation mechanism does its business.
I gave up at 2300h last night and went horizontal.
Geoff - Headache no doubt due to all that brain effort last night.

Murray, EPDM sheet offered on eBay, various thicknesses and sizes. For the mill and shaper I used some of the 3mm thick sheet I have. I will try 1mm on the Marlow and see how that works, as the magnetic bases don't work through 3mm. Frank, I did think of using a wool thread but decided against. Cigarette filter! Amazing how people come up with solutions. Doesn't the filter need a good reservoir/head in order to get oil to filter through? Now where to find an unused ciggy filter? Ah next door smoke. Geoff - Lazy day. |
Thread: Toolcl BG1224 Lathe |
04/01/2015 10:15:49 |
Hello Chris, Welcome to THE best hobby imaginable, be it making steam engines or tools. The lathe looks identical to my Warco BH600G. I bought mine 2nd hand unseen from a model engineer at t'other end of the country. More than happy with it, and recommend that form without reservation, but, always a but, provided the QC of Toolco is up to scratch. If possible it's best to inspect the machine and move all the moving parts. I did this on a machine at MM some years ago and it felt as if the surfaces of the moving parts where serrated/knurled - horrible. If you do purchase, do the mods I am and doing to mine, as it has totally transformed its operation. Those done by Anthony Mount, and serialised in ME, are worth considering and they encouraged me to do mine. Geoff - Blithering headache |

The oil hole in the Tom Senior Overarm bearing I recently made was way to big so soldered it up and drilled a No.70 hole. Too small so went to enlarge it and the solder plug promptly fell out and disappeared down that black hole every Workshop has. OK I need to use 'proper' solder so got the spool of Fry's, cleaned the hole, heated and plugged it up. Filed inside and out smooth and drilled No.65 but still no oil getting onto the Spindle spacers so opened it out No.60 and oil getting through. Has anyone done any experiments to determine the hole size to feed oil to shafts? Photos of the rubber sheeting covering the tables on the TS & Boxford; Geoff - Mill keyways in vices tomorrow.

Well JS should do well in a desert environment then Just finished roasting three lots of coffee beans when the fan I use at the kitchen door, to exhaust roasting smoke, starting making a funny noise, so switched it off and it promptly went bang, with smoke escaping. CB tripped, so a short circuit in the thing, but it's 20 odd years old so shouldn't complain, I will nevertheless. On Tuesday made covers to fit either side of the vices on the milling machine and shaper tables, out of rubber sheet, as I got rather fed up at cleaning out the T-slots. Now to make it easy to get the vices squared up, I will mill keyways in the bottom of the vices to fit steel stock in to fit into the T-slots. Should be quicker compared with the fiddle of using a DTI. Oh, I was somewhat disappointed with the Vertex vices I have, as I had to open out the slots in the swivel bases to get the zero line on the vice to line up with the 0° & 90° on the Base. I dislike intensely the crackle finish on the Handles! Who on earth thought that that was a good idea? Got that off my chest Geoff - A Happy and Prosperous New Year to all |

MichaelG, Agree about strong coffee in the morning, as it wakes things up ready for the off I make mine from home roasted beans and use a Coffee Master syphon system to brew. The first time I had a cup of coffee from home roasted beans, I was sold. Other half refuses point blank to drink mine as she says it's too strong. Huh, she needs to try the petit cups of proper French stuff to find out what strong coffee is. Two cups a day was enough for me when I lived in Grenoble. I used to drink anything up to 10 mugs of instant per day beforehand, now three at most of 'OuBallie' brand. Geoff - Making swarf covers for the mill, lathe & shaper tables today. |
Thread: Electric motors |
28/12/2014 20:44:34 |
Just read ME Issue 1086 and the interest being generated in AC commutator motors, owing to the development of AC supply. 92 years on and we take electric motors so much for granted now, and think little of what our forebears had to endure, either in the hobby or industrial fields. I just think of the VFD drives I now have on all my machines and marvel at the technology. Makes me wonder why batteries are lagging so far behind, but no doubt vested interests have something to do with this sad state of affairs. Geoff - Tomorrow bring more items into the Workshop, from the Shed. |

Thread: Engineering as a Profession |
24/12/2014 14:05:09 |
I remember the TV series in which Sir John Harvey-Jones toured the country helping businesses. The one program that summed up the the way this country sees engineering was when he asked a group of, I think female, Uni students if they had ever considered engineering. They all looked absolutely aghast at him, then one of them said "What, Trade?" He then went on to mention that one of them was from the Yale lock family - Trade in their eyes. If mothers think this about engineering, then there is no hope. Geoff - My last post today, so Merry Christmas to all 'Muddle Engineers'
