Dear Model Engineers, I post from Cyprus and need your help. My husband, Michael Bird was an avid reader and in 2009 purchased a complete set of castings to build an Allchin Royal Chester as a retirement project. He posted many questions and was always very grateful for you all coming back so quickly and with such good advice.

He completed the front section of the engine at the end of 2011 and was enjoying the whole experience so very much when he was suddenly and unexpectedly taken to a better place, having had a massive stroke from which he didn't recover.

My world ended and I have been unable until recently to go into the workshop and look at all the things he loved so much, but realise I have to dispose of things which I can never use - this was prompted by someone wanting to buy his lathe.

A vintage car enthusiast has purchased his semi restored 1933 MG J2 and this is being shipped back to UK this Autumn. The lovely man from Brighton who has bought the MG has also offered to ship the remains of the Allchin along with the car, if I would like. Of course I couldn't part with the completed section of the engine, which I'm guessing is about a quarter of it - this is destined for my grandson eventually. However, I have photographed the completed section and then photographed all the remaining bits of the engine, castings, paint, etc. etc. so that you can see what is left and would ask if you could please be kind enough to look at these pictures, and tell me if you think they are worth something to someone who is maybe building an engine bit by bit. I don't know how to post the photographs on here, but maybe if you could give me an email address to send them to for your opinion, i would be very grateful.

I hope someone out there can help and advise me, and will look forward to a reply. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this post.

Angela Bird

Hi Angela,
Here is the procedure to upload pictures to this forum. (I think this forum should have a help button as many things about it are different to other forums and not intuitive.)

Uploading pictures to the Model engineers Forum.

1 Click on "My Photos" (Under "My Account" at top left of Home page.)

2 Click on "Create a Photo Album" (Fill in a name and description for the album)

3 Click on "Create Album"

4 Click on one of the "browse" buttons. (Navigate to the folder and photo you want to upload. They must be in .jpg format.)

5 Repeat this to select up to three more photos then click on "Upload Photos"

6 If you want to add more photos click on "Edit Album Info" and then click on "Add More Photos" (As in steps 4 and 5)

Now you have the pictures in "My Photos" on the website you can insert them into your reply on the forum.

To do this click on the "insert image" button at the top of the "Post a reply" box (Next to last button)
This will show you the albums you have uploaded. Now select the photo you want to insert.

I cannot help with information on the engine but getting pictures on the forum will be a good start.
One other point. It is not a good idea to post your email address on forums as it may be used by spammers. One good feature of this forum is the private message feature. This allows you to send a message to another member which does not appear on the forum. This is a safer way to exchange email addresses.

Les.

Everyone let us all step in and help this lady, do not like the idea of some dealer getting in and saying "I will take the lot away for you " no matter how nice he is. how many times over the years on this forum have we heard this.

Hello Angela,

I'm sorry to hear of Michael's passing.

I hope I'm correct in reading that the chap has offered to take them to a purchaser in England, rather than just cart it all away, which makes it feasible for it to be sold.

It may be worth boxing up the castings, if you have a way of storing them. Whatever you sell them for now will be a fraction of what your grandson will have to find if he ever decides to complete the engine.

I am past my sell by date but my kids have all told me, not asked, to keep everything in the workshop and if that is their request I will happily do so. I have had a great deal of fun and satisfaction from the workshop and if they get anything like as much I will be very happy to let them do so.

I would like to thank you all so much for your replies to my post, especially so to Jason, who has so very kindly catalogued all the parts, done a complete list with part numbers and given me a fair valuation.

I can't tell you all how grateful I am. Having received this information, I have today placed an ad on this website, and will also advertise it on two other sites recommended by Jason.

God bless you all for your help, kind thoughts  and advice,

Angela Bird.
