Thread: JASON OR MGJ ARE YOU OUT THERE PLEASE, I NEED ADVICE

I would like to thank you all so much for your replies to my post, especially so to Jason, who has so very kindly catalogued all the parts, done a complete list with part numbers and given me a fair valuation.

I can't tell you all how grateful I am. Having received this information, I have today placed an ad on this website, and will also advertise it on two other sites recommended by Jason.

God bless you all for your help, kind thoughts  and advice,

Angela Bird.

Dear Model Engineers, I post from Cyprus and need your help. My husband, Michael Bird was an avid reader and in 2009 purchased a complete set of castings to build an Allchin Royal Chester as a retirement project. He posted many questions and was always very grateful for you all coming back so quickly and with such good advice.

He completed the front section of the engine at the end of 2011 and was enjoying the whole experience so very much when he was suddenly and unexpectedly taken to a better place, having had a massive stroke from which he didn't recover.

My world ended and I have been unable until recently to go into the workshop and look at all the things he loved so much, but realise I have to dispose of things which I can never use - this was prompted by someone wanting to buy his lathe.

A vintage car enthusiast has purchased his semi restored 1933 MG J2 and this is being shipped back to UK this Autumn. The lovely man from Brighton who has bought the MG has also offered to ship the remains of the Allchin along with the car, if I would like. Of course I couldn't part with the completed section of the engine, which I'm guessing is about a quarter of it - this is destined for my grandson eventually. However, I have photographed the completed section and then photographed all the remaining bits of the engine, castings, paint, etc. etc. so that you can see what is left and would ask if you could please be kind enough to look at these pictures, and tell me if you think they are worth something to someone who is maybe building an engine bit by bit. I don't know how to post the photographs on here, but maybe if you could give me an email address to send them to for your opinion, i would be very grateful.

I hope someone out there can help and advise me, and will look forward to a reply. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this post.

Thread: BW Electronics DROs
27/09/2011 09:39:59
Hi all
The article by David Haythornthwaite regarding BW Electronics systems in the October issue No 181 of MEW I found to be very interesting and encouraging for a newbie, re the ease of fitting and the price. However, before I buy I would welcome the views of the experts and anyone who has fitted and is using the system.

Thread: Material for smoke boxes

Hi,

Sorry for the delay but can I now thank you all for your help and guidance. A special thank you to Jason for giving me the link to Feraday Cylinders. Nice people, have ordered one, job done.

Hi all,

For the smoke box (the how to book) tells me that I need a 2.1/2" long piece of steel tube to finish at 4.1/8" diameter with a minimum wall thickness of 3/32".

Has anybody any ideas where on earth I can find such a piece or even a solid chunk that I can bore out?

Hope you can help,

Joshua
Thread: Would you buy it?
28/10/2010 13:28:16
Hello,

I don't know how to make a link here, but if you search Ebay, for " Allchin Traction engines" you will find a listing for a 1/12" Allchin Boiler.

I know absolutely nothing about boilers, but if I continue to make the model I shall need one.  A new one is £800 plus.  What are the risks in buying second hand ?  Can it, or could it be made into a safe, serviceable boiler for this model?

Ray
Thread: Countersinking rivets
25/10/2010 11:48:28
Hi Jason,

thank you for the advice about copper rivets - do I use these as supplied, or do I anneal them first ?
25/10/2010 06:05:29
Hi Jason,

Re Countersinking: thanks so much for your speedy and again, most informative answers - appreciated !  Just one point - when painting alloy rims, do you use a etch primer ?

Hello All,

I am fixing strakes (16 gauge) with 3/32" steel rivets, round head on the inside and countersunk into the strakes, on traction engine wheels.

Can someone please tell me (a) what size I should make the major diameter when countersinking the strakes (90deg)?

(b) How much rivet should I leave to fill this countersink to form a nice hamered finish. not filed flat?

The rivets I have are black - should these be put in pickle of some kind before I use them?.

It seems sensible to paint the wheel side of the strakes to prevent rusting, so what should I use for this?

Cheers,
Ray
Thread: Material to use ?

Hi,

Please advise - can I use EN1A F/C steel for the shafts on my 1.1/2" Allchin. One  shaft of course has splines, however, it will be more a thing of beauty (I hope) than a work horse.  Your comments please

Thread: Rear Toolpost Parting Off on C3 Mini Lathe?
03/04/2010 16:39:35

mgj

excuse me for being very much a beginner, but if one is parting with a rear tool post with the lathe running forward, is there not the same lifting force on the cross slide as would be the case when parting from the front with the lathe running in reverse.

It would seem that many posts on this site advocate that parting from the rear is the answer to most parting problems, ease of chip clearing etc.  So it would seem to me that without a rear post, the way to go is with a front post and the lathe in reverse.  Thanks for your time

Hello mgj

the reason I am considering parting off using the front tool post with the lathe in reverse is because I do not have a rear tool post and my cross slide does not have T slots.

Cheers
Bob.

hi mgj

If I am using a KIT-Q-Cut mounted upside down in the front tool post, and running the lathe in reverse, should the tool be above or below the centre line.

Thread: allchin water pump
26/03/2010 14:24:35
Hi Jason,

Thanks for your comments.  I will go ahead and make it with a 1/8" dia. spigot on the plunger and see what happens, but still wonder if it's an 1/8" dia what purpose does it serve?  By the way, do you know of a forum that is dedicated to traction engine building where I could perchance chat with somebody who is also building an Allchin or similar.
Thanks again, Bob
23/03/2010 10:06:47
Hi all,

The "how to" book states that the passage between the barrel and the valve chamber is drawn as 1/8" dia. but should be 5/32" dia. and must be concentric to (or should it be with) the barrel. This dia. is actually shown as 5/32 on my set of drawings.

The drawing of the plunger shows the small dia. on the end as 1/8"dia. (help)  If it should be 1/8" dia. why the need for concentricity?  If it should be 5/32" and a sliding fit on the small bore, surely there will be a pressure build up between this and the O ring on the plunger.... or am I being silly ?

Yours, Bob

Just to say, thank you Frank,  did another search, and have been able to source Jenolite on Ebay, both liquid and gel.

Frank Dolman mentions Jenolite in his reply, can I ask him is this still available, and where I can purchase it from online.  I have read many mentions of Jenolite in car restorations books, but having searched extensively cannot find a supplier.

Thread: Grinding hss

Hi,

Having read the comments regarding tangential tooling, I have looked at the website and the video and yes I am ready to buy.  However, I am very much a beginner and find it somewhat confusing as to what size I should order.

I have a 6" lathe and its X dimension is slightly shy of 14mm, so I assume that the B16 is not for me.  The A 9.5 is said to be suitable for 4.1/2" lathes - I am hoping that one of you learned gentlemen can advise me which size I should order.
