Following adding windows, doors and lining out, the shunter still looked toy-like.

After seeing Ray MacMahon's Harlandic I refinished it all over with matt varnish and it looks much better. Desite the wierd lighting effects the finish is much the colour in the photos.

I now have an 0-6-0 in 7 1/4" in mind...

I like the detailed photos in your album. Takes one right through the build.

Great set of photos Neil. Every time I see pics on here of things people have built it really encourages me to get on with building something myself. It's a hell of a learning curve though. After my first year of model engineering (admittedly, lucky if I get one day a week) I still spend more time reading how to do stuff than doing it. Must try harder this year.

Thanks Guys,

If anyone is interested in having a go, I have part-finished drawings and instructions - enough for someone determined to make their own, and I would greatly value comments and feedback. Let me know if you are interested.

There are several variants it could be made as Google for 'hudswell clarke" and add one of "Mary", "Carroll" or "Mighty Atom", "Southam" or "Southam 2".

For the record it weighs 23lbs, about 16" long is powered by a shower motor with a stall current of 7A and is powered by a 7Ah lead acid battery from a fire alarm. It pulled an 18 stone chap on a big driving trolley happily and after much slipping pulled me and another chap on the same trolley (just).

In terms of size , weight and performance it is about the equivalent of Tich.

Hello Alex,

What would you like to kow? there are more photos HERE and threads mentioning it can be found by searching Google for "hudswell clarke site:model-engineer.co.uk" (without the quotes).

Well done that man!

As mentioned above this is a slow steep curve hobby and life seems to always be getting in the way, even simple stuff can take ages

36 hour days would be useful for this hobby

Neil,

Any chance you can be persuaded to write it up for publication in ME?

HI Robin,

I have promised to send it to Diane - it's 90% written up and 90% drawn up, but unfortunately I'm struggling to find the time to complete it.

Hello Alex,

Please me at [email protected]

The only bought in parts were four Tich horrnblocks and some heavy duty 6mm x1" springs from Reeves. I also used a bevel wheel pair from a bust angle grinder (cheap from ebay), as 12V burglar alarm battery and the 12V motor from a Shurflo shower pump.

If you don't want to cut your own gears you will need an assortment of medium size ones, though actual size is not critical - I'm going to add notes on using a poly-v belt drive instead.

Neil
