The last 2 inches of my regulater connecting rod are 5/32 square section. I cant make it any bigger or it will foul the valve link arms. Ive only got steel or brass, cant use steel in boiler (wont last long at that thickness) so question is, will brass be strong enough? I inted to fit travel stops on the regulator arm so it wont be possible to put lots of torque into it, I just dont want it twisting/shearing off!!

Why not stainless steel?

Since it is inside the boiler I would use either Bronze or Stainless Steel. (Copper is the only other material I would use inside a boiler but is not strong enough in this case)

What length do you need? 4mm stainless keysteel is available but in 300mm lengths.

Kwil on here was after some a while ago and I put him onto my local Stainless stockholder but I think he may have had to settle on a 3m length of 5mm in the end.

Can you not mill down the next available size?

fizzy,

You could comfortably mill, or file, 5/32" square; from a short length of 6mm diameter Stainless.

... That shouldn't be difficult to find.

I went down the route of milling a square end on the 1/4 shaft - got a bit of help as my mill is rubbish!

Yes it was 5mm square stainless. Not really a problem, just mill it down. Had to make some 4mm square brass the other day for a small job, no point in buying it.
