Just started building a model of a Dake engine

Dake engines was a very sucesful US design, It has a very novel twin square cylinder design working inside each other, being none dead centre it has almost instant reversing, hence it was used for power steering in ship and large American built traction engines, it could be run on steam or air and was also used in hoyst and ship deriks

That looks interesting Stewart. Do you intend to give a blow by blow account like Jason's recent thread?

Regards

Norman

Yes it certainly is different Neil, it calls for some interesting set ups, I don't realy know how this one will end up, but you have to try to find out.

Got the back plate finished off apart from a bit of tarting up.

Got a few more bits made. I've reached that stage in the build when self doubt starts to kick in, will it work is this bit Ok etc etc and things have advanced where all you can do is "keep calm and carry on"

Came across this picture of a Dake engine being used to power a winch, I think this set up would add some interest to the model if only I could drop on some geers.

Thanks for the input Andy.

The more I look into the history of the Dake the more fasinating it becomes, it was certainly put to use in a wide range of aplication, apparently they made over 10,000 engines as part of the war effort and were extensivly used in Liberty Ships and the Big Tank Landing Craft.

Came across a pic of this rusting hulk apparently it a Dake Engine powered fork lift truck.

Got the recesses machined in the cylinder for the inner piston flange apparently this helps with sealing of the ports.

Made the crank yesterday and I was thinking only the fly to go and we can give it a try, then I remembered I had a spare machined up 4" fly wheel, why not give it a go.

And it works smiley which is a big releaf as the valve geometery was very much based on guess work..

I'll post a video some time over the week end

A happy Stew

Hi Stew,

Someone who can find a weirder engine than Anthony Mount!

Could you do a video of it being rotated by hand with the cover off?
