Neil It is quite small 10mm total depth shank is 8mm and the gear is a fraction over 17mm, I didn't have the correct gear cutter at the timeso i had to improvise!(slitting saw and various files) It's only for the steering on a large scale vintage boat. I tried running it with the damaged gear whilst it was in the lathe it all seems ok and at reasonably high speed. I think this will be 360 degree turn and back at most so can't see a problem. I've now picked up more gear cutters so will make another, but I was just wondering what people thought as it was my first attempted at gear cutting

![]() 508 forum posts 98 photos | Here we go again! Another post half covered by Ad's. Sorry about that rant Jon, the gear looks good for a hand cut job. I once cut a 2 1/2" ratchet wheel 60 teeth, with a piercing saw and file. I cut such things on my mill nowadays. Cheers Derek Edit. I tried to make each line short, but first line still too long ( missing word is good) Edited By magpie on 24/09/2012 22:41:48 |

![]() 7468 forum posts 230 photos | I'v only cut a couple of gears, both with a fly cutter ground on the bench grinder, to as near as I could get to a similar gear, they worked OK, and proberbly no better or worse than yours, I'd say for what its to be used for, quite adiquate. Ian S C |
