Well done Nobby !

The old turning books can have quite a few pages dedicated to various copy turning systems but I never see much about it nowadays

I suppose cnc has taken much of it out of the sphere of things

Hi Mick & Guys
Before C.N.C the company I worked at toolmaking etc. we used this idea turning the cavitys for moulds for bearings for train suspensoin units about 14" dia. . the template was turned first . Later they were turned using the C.N.C.lathe. Showing my age . Its my birthday today & I now get free a

I wonder if it would be possible to use a bar with a tapered end instead of the dial indicator. Manipulate the cross-slide so the point stays in contact with the template. That way, you couldn't go in too deep. It would also partly remove some of the inaccuracies which would arise if the dial indicator had a rounded end, so that on the rounded parts of the template, its contact would be on the side of its end, rather than at the tip. With a finely tapered bar, this would not happen, except where the curves on the template were getting close to perpendicular to the spindle axis.

Just a thought, and it may be impractical. .

Andy.

Congratulations Nobby, it's my birthday too!!

I made myself a present of the ER32 indexing blocks (aka Stevenson Blocks) from ARC. Very nice piece of equipment....

Good work with your copy system; think I have to remember this when the need arises.

Greetings, Hansrudolf

Hi Nobby,

Looks like it gives really impressive results. Presumably one just feeds automatically along the lathe axis and aims to keep the dial gauge reading the same by manipulation of the cross slide?

With regards to the shape of the follower, the manual for my hydraulic copy unit recommends that the follower be the same shape as the tool. Obviously that requires careful selection of the tool shape with regards to the shape of the master to ensure accurate copies.

Regards,

Andrew

Hi Andyf & Andrew J & Guys
As Andrew says the tool to copy correct has to be the same form as the stylus at 1 to 1 . as you may know in diesinking you can have 2-1 etc. . The hydraulic ones I have used dont like 90 degreee corners. Hansrudolf I wonder if your mum & dad were on the same coach as my mum & dad ?
Joking aside the other copy atachment I made relys on a pressure on the template using a lever set up . you may have seen it on another thread.
Thanks everybody
Regards Nobby

Sorry missed your birthdays.

One thing never tried but been thinking for a few years. Can get a hydraulic copy for mine but too dear. I presume in simplistic form its very much like using stops ie dead stops you can feel when reached.

Certainly comes in to its own if doing more than one with profiles of that nature. None profiles ie square edged is dead simple as a one off and there lies the difference.

Nice work.

Cheers Jon & Guys
The Hydraulic one I have used approach the template or component @ an angle as i said they had problems with 90 degree corners. My other one can copy turned items a well between centres
I'm off shopping now
