Now I remember reading something about chemi blacking the other day, but have forgotten exactly where, so could I scratch your collective brains again and ask for a suitable product to blacken some cylinders and if possible a source of supply.
Thanks in advance |

![]() 1655 forum posts 617 photos | Are they steel cylinders Mick? If so Jenolite Kold Blak will do the trick though it does not wear as well as the professional process which involves heat I believe.
One of the model engineering suppliers used to sell a similar product at shows - sorry can't help you with a name perhaps someone else can help.
Kold Blak has a long shelf life - I bought mine in the mid eighties and it still works fine.
I'm sure others will add to this

![]() 131 forum posts 8 photos | I am using Blackfast - a room temperature process for iron, steel and zinc. Mine came from John Lines in Queensland (Australia) whose email address is john@ protecmetals.com.
The kit came with the chemicals, sealable containers in which to use and keep the diluted chemicals already labelled, comprehensive and clear instructions (the process is simple) and product safety data sheets for each of the chemicals.
The chap who recommended it to me has had his for about 5 years and it still works.
It works for me.

![]() 558 forum posts 28 photos | Will blacking help prevent rust ? Only as as some stuff I turned last year seems to have developed a few rust spots over the winter. Was originally black bar and now obviously I've removed the outer layer to produce the finished piece. As it's a tailstock die holder I need it to have good life expectancy without being eaten away by rust.

![]() 713 forum posts 6 photos | The gun blacking compounds I have used do not prevent rust. In fact, unless the parts are first scrupulously cleaned after blacking, then oiled, they seem to promote rust - probably because of their acidic nature. |

3681 forum posts 70 photos | Once you have blacked it and then washed it, dewatered it, you then must immerse in oil and allow the oil to penetrate the coating. Leave it for some time, say 1-2 hours. Then drip "dry". If kept "oily" it seems OK but if you wipe all the oil away and then leave it in a "wet" atmosphere, it will rust. Commercial blacking is a lot harder and durable. |

421 forum posts 49 photos | Is there a web site or e-mail address for Delway Technical Services as all I can find is a postal address and phone number.
There dosn't seem to be a UK supplier for Kold Blak and there now seems to be a rap band of the same name!
Is the £45 GLR are asking for their kit what I should be looking to pay for chemi blacking?
Thanks.

883 forum posts 11 photos | Hi Mick Have a look at the following website:- http://www.finescale.org.uk If you look down the navigation side bar you'll see a link to metal blackening. I believe the products are made by Carrs. I've not tried the version for white metal / steel, but I have used the version for brass and been very happy with it. The brass version is all cold operations and I believe so are the others. The small pot at £4.50 sounds to be worth a try. Keith
