How nice to see something being properly made by hand, BUT they still only tell the same time as a cheap watch that you throw away when the battery runs out!

Very true Kwil but, with regard to Model Engineering, is anything we make of any use?
From the simplest oscillating engine to the latest masterpiece from Cherry Hill they may be satisfying for the constructor and amazing to others but surely wholly unnecessary ? You may say that the model loco or traction engine is "useful" in providing rides for kiddies and raising revenue for a club but a "cheap" battery powered unit ( suitably disguised) would no doubt do pretty much as well. The pleasure is in the making. In the dim and distant past , for my 21st birthday, I was given an Omega wrist watch. Still lovely today - accurate, quiet and stylish. Last time I had it serviced I seem to recall it cost me around £150 - that would buy a lot of throw aways ! I don't wear it often and, as you say, have a cheaper ( and maybe more accurate!) watch for everyday use. The mechanical watch however still gives me pleasure after all these years.
Cheap can be good but seldom satisfying!
Cheers
Norman

Having read most of your 585 posts KWIL, I have developed a great respect for your abilities/expertise in this hobby of ours.
Are you being deliberately and mischievously provocative here? Surely the issues here are those of craftsmanship and quality and I'm guessing that you hold those extremely highly.

Like Niloch, having read many of KWIL's posts, I have a healthy respect for his knowledge and ability. Strong suspicion that he is being slightly mischievous, wonder what gave me that impression. Even cheaper is to ask one of your fellow pedestrians "What's the time, please ?"

There is always room for a little tongue in cheek, my own best watch is a Longines VHP, would have bought a half decent machine tool when new!!

A watch is the handcuff of civilisation. (Dunno who to attribute that to.)

I haven't worn one for about twenty years, although I have several lying around, including a couple of good Seikos.

regards

John,
I've conjured an image in my mind of you swinging a pocket watch upon its chain and making it pop into your waistcoat pocket at the end of one of its swings.
Now let me see, was it the moustachioed comedian Jimmy Edwards who did that?
There must be someone here who is as old as I am!!!!!
