Hi Folks, many moons ago when I was at school we used some rapid drying blue stuff to mark out on steel etc, I have no idea what it was called and would like to buy some. I tried "micrometer blue" but that stays sticky and smudges (which I now understand is its function).

I seem to remember we removed it from the work with meths

So your advise/help would be much appreciated

Hi
It is called Marking Blue, or layout blue. It is essentially Prussian blue mixed with meths.

As said and you should be able to get a small bottle from most of the model engineering suppliers.

But make sure you do not buy engineers blue which comes in a small flat tin, this is a thick paste use to test the fit of parts.

A large permanent marker pen can also be used but I find it comes off quicker.

Easiest is a broad felt tip marker, cover the metal and scribe the lines through that.

there's two types of marking blue [I have both] there's the translucent type for marking bright metals & also the opaque type for marking black bar etc,I like the idea of dipping a felt tip into marking blue, you get the best of both worlds!!

Marking out blue or Layout blue is available from (among others) Chronos http://www.chronos.ltd.uk/  It is easily removed with methylated spirit.  I put it on with a small brush and a small amount will probably last you for years.
