91 forum posts 8 photos | Hi Folks, many moons ago when I was at school we used some rapid drying blue stuff to mark out on steel etc, I have no idea what it was called and would like to buy some. I tried "micrometer blue" but that stays sticky and smudges (which I now understand is its function). I seem to remember we removed it from the work with meths So your advise/help would be much appreciated Duncan |

It is called Marking Blue, or layout blue. It is essentially Prussian blue mixed with meths. |

But make sure you do not buy engineers blue which comes in a small flat tin, this is a thick paste use to test the fit of parts.
A large permanent marker pen can also be used but I find it comes off quicker.

![]() 304 forum posts 28 photos | there's two types of marking blue [I have both] there's the translucent type for marking bright metals & also the opaque type for marking black bar etc,I like the idea of dipping a felt tip into marking blue, you get the best of both worlds!! |

![]() 116 forum posts | Marking out blue or Layout blue is available from (among others) Chronos http://www.chronos.ltd.uk/ It is easily removed with methylated spirit. I put it on with a small brush and a small amount will probably last you for years.
