I bought a wm 250 but unlike David's mine has been great. The only handy hint I can give is if you do buy one the metal straps that secure the pallet can be cut up to make excellent shims (dozens of um !)

Hi Martin. I bought a wm250 to replace my mini lathe and to be honest I think it's great. It all worked "out of the box" and I have made lots of things on it without any problems. I have never used any of the myfords etc so cannot comment but I'm a happy bunny.

Hi Chaps, I could do with a wee bit of advice (again!) I'm attempting to machine the rim of my "Wyvern" engine flywheel and using the face plate seemed the best way. bits of Perspex type stuff as stand offs but have a bit of a problem

as you can see the nearest I can get the carriage to the face plate will leave about 50mm of tool overhanging (this is with the topslide fully extended).

I think its the concertina type leadscrew cover causing the problem. The only thing I can think of is to make a long back to front boring tool (I suppose I mean a long RH tool) will this work or will it vibrate horribly?

Well I'm on the converted list I've been using cheap ebay drill since I started this malarkey a couple of years ago (bought um in batches of 5 as they didn't last) then I bought a few presto from rdg, the difference is staggering they romped through steel with no pressure at all. I now plan to gradually replace the old ones and only use them to drill through warm butter and very brown bananas

Hi Chaps

So a few weeks ago I took delivery of my lovely new Warco wm 250 lathe (Which I luurve muchley and wonder how I got by with a mini lathe for so long) and needed to bore the middle of the water jacket for my Hemmingway Wyvern engine.

Unpacked the 4 jaw chuck which came on a backplate with studs and nuts, cleaned off the grease and fitted to the lathe (really just another 15mm would make it easier

did the machining which turned our fabbo and looks great then decided to refit the 3 jaw, I loosened the three securing nuts a few turns but the chuck was stuck on the lathe. So I gave it a tap with my nylon headed hammer and the chuck just FELL OFF on to the lathe bed leaving the backplate securely stuck on the lathe mandrill (luckily I always stick a big lump of hardwood on the ways when changing chucks).

I later found the 4 cap head screws in the cardboard box tucked under the oily flap. If the things had come loose while spinning at speed I'm fairly sure it would have climbed up the front of me as the jaws were sticking out from the body like gear teeth..... Not blaming WARCO at all, just my self for not checking.

After months of "Do I have the ability to build this" I bit the bullet and ordered the casting set for the "Wyvern engine" from Hemmingway for £320

I while later I got an e-mail from Kirk at the above asking If I would prefer to purchase the special deal instead which has lots of extra freebies and he has also refunded me £20 as the package is cheaper

In this post bankers bunfest of a recession he could have quite easily fulfilled my order and I would have been none the wiser.....

So splendid service which is just lovely

Thanks chaps, well I didn't do either pumping out or oily sucking in but I have now ! It's all gunmetal and stainless in the hot and bothered end so hopefully should be ok. The rest of the seals are instant gasket but I left one out coz I thought I was getting to be all clever with my turning ..... That's me telled

Hi chaps, well I just connected my tina horizontal engine to my glr vertical boiler, I had fired up the boiler before (which was fun) and run the engine on air, but WHAT a difference when you put them together!!,! It's so exciting a big hissing lump of hot metal.

so not a question just wanted to share my happy dance with someone . Things I have learnt. Steam finds leaks where air doesn't (need to put a gasket on the cylinder head it leaks a little ) and I need to put a drain valve on the cylinder head to get rid of all the spluttery condensate till it gets hot.

once I have tweaked it a bit will hopefully post a wee viddy

Yup I run slow and cool, but not sure of the best way of cutting. Do I do many passes with a small cut or is is best to just "plunge cut " but with a slow rate of feed ?

Thank you chaps, I've been playing "guess the depth"for ages and now feel as thick as mince. So simple!

I got an email today from the supplier, they are sending out a new boss for me, which I am quite happy with as it would be a right faff to package up the thing and send it back . I have had quite a few other strange tools from various sources, an eccentric slitting saw arbour and oval shaped knurls all promptly replaced. But this is what you get when buying on the cheap.

i would love to buy "quality" but don't have the dosh, however these cheap tools let me make things and bring me a lot of enjoyment .

I think its the boss, not measured anything but it just looks wrong!

Just got my nice new rotary table with dividing plates from one of the big suppliers (who shall remain anonymous until they reply to my e-mail ) attempted to fit the dividing plates and found the holes out of line see the piccy below.

Kind of ironic really

I ordered some solder off CuP alloys recently, but by mistake ordered the wrong type, cup not only sent out the replacement before they received the first lot back. They didn't even charge me postage (which I was quite happy to pay ) sterling service and my custom forever
