Hello everyone,
I have  'volunteered' for the job of winding electromagnetic coils for a club project.    Having tried this freehand - albeit at very slow speeds, the results, to say the least are in need of some improvement.

Now, I recall  that some considerable time ago - maybe even years - that there was an article in in one of the model magazines ( M.E,  EIM or ME Workshop) on winding coils using the Myford and a setup to get 'professional' results.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please ?

In anticipation....and hope,    Many thanks.

Ideally you need a coil winder, cos the wire goes through a series of tension rollers (Similar in operation to a sewing machine thread feed) and it is then fed by the forward and reverse mechanism similar to a lathe leadscrew laying onto the former. (Don't arsk).

Hi There,

Dave Gingery  Produced a design for a simple home made, hand operated coil winder.  I think I have a copy of the leaflet somewhere, I could scan the important bits, if you're interested email me privately.

Hi Aylingsteamer
To try to point you in the right direction, what size coils are you trying to wind and for what voltage and usage ?
                       Regards Bill.

Many years ago, I have no idea of the exact period, probably in the fifties and well before any involvement I had with ME there was I believe, a back and forth discussion in ME between (I think) Edgar Westbury and one Ernie Shaw.

Apparently Ernie had stated that he thought it was possible to wind small 'scale' electric motors that were small enough to fit to the frames of a model tram that would be powerful enough to drive it. I believe ETW disagreed.

The relevance this has to Aylingsteamers request is that I worked with Ernie's son for several years and when Ernie died he passed on to me some of his fathers ME items. One of these was the coil winder he had used for the task above which incidentally  I was told proved successful.  This winder is hand powered, has a forward and reverse tumbler gear on the travelling wire guide and works very freely. The drive belt needs replacing but other than that there is little to do to make it work given the gearing is correct for your needs. The leadscrew is 40tpi. The drive ratio can be easily changed by making new drive pulleys and as you can see there is a mechanical counter fitted (Doesn't appear to have a zeroing facility though)

I have never used it and certainly don't want to part with it permanently however I'm sure that Ernie and his son Martin would like to think of it being put to good use in the manner it was intended for.

Assuming you are in the UK and you can guarantee that you will eventually ensure it's safe return I would be only too happy to forward it on for you to use if it is suitable for your purpose.

Regards - Ramon

This probably won't help much, but I'll throw it in anyway.  If you can find a 'mature' radio ham then try to locate a copy of Wireless World from the late 60's early 70's.  In one of those there is an article with drawings etc on building a coil winder. An old friend of mine built it and it would pile wind, wave wind and even wind the rotors on small motors. it was fully adjustable and quite simple to use. If you or anyone can find it I would be interested in it as well. My other hobby is Astronomy, Optical and Radio.  The receivers that I need to build use coils for the R.F. stages.

Just a random thought really.

Have you tried looking for second hand coil winders on Ebay?
