Not tried it but its a nice looking engine. If you don't have the original build series articles they are reprinted in his book and worth having.

If its of any help this homepage of a german builder has a lot of pictures of constrution if you click the "zum bauburicht" link at the bottom of this page, the other link takes you to photos of the finished engine and a video of it running

Just put the web page into a translator like Babblefish, it comes out quite well but a few of the technical terms can be a bit amusing

Hi Tony

Anthony Mount gives details of the valve settings in his book "Historic Engines Worth Modelling : Volume 2 " - click here for info. He usually exhibits at the Bristol Exhibition in August and I'm sure he would be willing to advise you.

Dave I too am attracted to this engine although the practicallity of a design which moves a heavy cylinder rather than a realtively light piston is questionable! Anyway I must first finish some of my outstanding ( or maybe that should be longstanding!! ) projects!

The finish achieved on the example in Jason's link is quite exceptional.

Regards

Norman

I wonder if the idea of moving the cylinder was to use gravity to supply the power on the down stroke? Ian S C

Hi Ian

I understand that the steam is fed down the ( hollow) cenral column and directed by a piston valve in the cylinder to either the top chamber or bottom chamber of the cylinder which has a fixed "piston" at its centre. The exhaust is similarly directed to the bottom of the central column.
