103 forum posts	The Proxxon catalogue delivered with ME 4369 reminded me that I purchased their drill sharpening machine about 4 years ago, since when it has resided under my bench. From time to time I haul it out & try yet again to get it to work but with a singular lack of success. Has anyone out there actually managed to sharpen a drill with this contraption? If so please will you share your secret(s). As an aside, I note that the more expensive items are shown as "Made in Europe", the lesser items are not so noted. Presumably this means that these items are from the Far East? The sharpener is not included in the European manufacture. Is this significant? Peter Gain.

3357 forum posts 112 photos 10 articles	Hi Peter It looks easy to use. Does the drill carriage just move left to right or does it swing side to side? It looks like it swings. As long as the edge of the drill is vertical, it should work fine. I would set the drill vertical when it is at the centre of the wheel and then just swing it. It should not take much experimentation to get it working correctly. regards David

103 forum posts	Hi David, Yes it does look easy to use. (That's why I bought it) BUT! The drill carriage swings from side to side, this movement causes the drill to partially rotate. Setting the drill vertically results in a pronounced negative clearance, depending on the diameter of the drill. The problem is that the angle at which the drill lips are offered to the wheel appears to be critical. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that different diameter drills require differing angles. It is all but impossible to re-set to the correct angle at a later date. After much experimenting I can occasionally, by happy accident, set the drill to the correct angle. Most attempts result in a three lobed hole which I can achieve by off hand grinding. Although this product is probably of Far Eastern manufacture, the design presumably originates from Germany. I would therefore expect it to be a sound piece of kit and am willing to concede that it is my misshandling which is the problem. I had hoped that some would reply who has actually got one to work. 18 forum posts	Hi, I got one and it performs well. It took half an hour to master it following the booklet. Start training with a medium drill 8mm as example, I found it easier. Clearly it is not as accurate as a professionnal drill grinder with collets which is worth £1000. As to me there are only two critical points to manage when sharpening drills: - the angle of each lip with the vertical drill axis has to be dead equal. It's not so important that it is 58.6° or 60.2° - the central chisel has to be straight symetrical and square to the vertical drill axis. The optimum angle is 55° with a plan parallel to the edge of the lips The proxxon seems to fit the bill on this two points. Drills are quite well sharpened. I must admit that under 5mm it' a bit tricky. regards, Patrick
