186 forum posts 94 photos | I bought a mixed lot of machine tooling and was hoping to get some help identifying this collet chuck. What collets are they? And what taper is the it? I've got a brideport so this obviously doesn't fit but I was wondering it I could machine the taper parallel to fit a suitable R8 collet? Thanks Colin

![]() 1257 forum posts 264 photos | Appears to be an ISO taper as stated probably INT40 as this is common. These are non-locking tapers having a standard slope of 7:24 (≈16° included angle). There are several different systems all using the same angle taper but with different draw-bar threads, ends and flanges so it can get a bit confusing. There are also several size ranges 30 to 60 but by far the most common is 40, there is a vast range of industrial tooling made with this taper.
Hope that helps a bit to identify what you have. I somehow doubt that you will be able to machine what you have to fit an R8 taper in the Bridgeport. John Edited By Journeyman on 25/08/2023 18:38:33 |

The easiest way to confirm, rather than to speculate, is to measure the drawbar thread: if it is M12 or 1/2", it will be 30 taper. If it is 5/8" or M16, it will be 40 taper. You can also measure the fat end of the taper: 1.25" for 30 taper, 1.75" for 40 taper. |

Our youngest member recently received an award for makling an INT40 taper fitting to carry ER40 collets, One can only hope that at no point during his making of it did he confer with you on specifications. Please advise how 3.75" per foot can work out to be 7 in 24. |

186 forum posts 94 photos | Thanks everyone. I'll have a look at the various raper specs. If I can identify it I will try and sell on. If not I'll have a go at turning the taper down. |
