Good morning friends

I have a BT 4600 cordless phone. The dialling tone is intermittent as if I had a call on my answering machine. I use BT 1571 not the answering machine on the phone. There is not a call there. I have two handsets and it is the same on both. I contacted BT and all they can come up with was. cancel 1571 and use the answering machine on the phone.

Anyone got ant ideas please

Roy

Have you got another sort of phone hanging about to plug in and test with?

We have a three handset 4600 system on Plusnet and never had any problem like that (oh dear that’s chancing fate).

Suggest you try something like "stuttering dial tone" or "intermittent dial tone" on'i t'internet. There are some ideas there.

Cheers,

Peter G. Shaw

p.s. It shouldn't be necessary to cancel 1571.

From BT's own web site;

1571 service: I have an interrupted dial tone, but no messages. What should I do?

If you have a stuttered dial tone, but no 1571 voice mail message waiting, it is likely that a caller has hung up after the call has connected, but before the message recording has started.

These steps will remove the interrupted dial tone:

  1. Call your number and leave a message when prompted
  2. Dial 1571 and delete the message

Note: Activating Call Diversion on your line will also cause a 'stuttered' dial tone. To find out how to check for this, visit How do I divert calls from my phone?.

Alas, this is the way the world is going. Back when I were a lad, the telephone was a leading way of providing support. And it being the suppliers front-door, telephone support was often staffed by well-trained people. Not now! Telephone support has long been supplanted by websites and chat rooms. It's becoming second-rate, best for finding out who to speak with when other methods have failed, which isn't easy.

Various reasons: telephone support is expensive, especially costly if expertise is needed; partly because 'stuff' is much more complicated when it goes wrong and ordinary employees don't know the answer either; and because many customers prefer to interact with machines rather than computers.

Well-designed websites do a better job than ordinary people. Possibly multi-lingual, web services never sleep, aren't forgetful, or grumpy, and are never upset by enraged customers! Unfortunately, many websites are not "well-designed", and a serious shortcoming is they require skills the pre-computer generation and many others don't have or want. My dad decided not to have anything to do with computers in 1965, was convinced they would never catch on, and lived to regret it! By the time he decided to have a go, it was all too complicated.

Best thing about this forum is how good the members are at answering technical questions of all sorts, or at least pointing folk in the right direction. I've learned something new about 1571, ta!

I have had this from BT SMS service calls when someone sends a text to a landline. I think it went away after another one came through and I chose to delete it.

My expeience with "Plus Failities" was that after everybody has tried everything one can normally try, ask a specialist at company to cancel your phone number setup completely and re-create it on the system as it was, sometimes some sw links get lost and cannot be restored with normal configurations or manipulations.
Martin has a good point.
NoteI stumbled on this method after some months of few isolated cases not solved with normal ways, which included all sorts of system configurations)

Thanks for all suggestions. I've even removed batteries from both handsets and unplugged the base unit.

It's still the same, I think I'll just have to live with it. At 89 it should last me out.

Thanks again
