I have a Brooks Compton Parkinson 370W motor fitted to my Myford lathe and notice that it has a lubrication cap, does anyone know what is a suitable oil and how much and often the motor should be lubricated?

Hi Morgan. I believe that it will be a grease cap for lubrication. The ones I have used have been just fill the cap with a standard lithium type grease, screw on a couple of threads then give it a half turn every month or so till it is screwed to the bottom then repeat when the cap has been screwed to the bottom.

Cup or cap?

A cup, often with spring loaded flap cover takes a light oil, 32 "hydraulic" oil similar.
A screw-down cap takes grease.

Thanks for the replies; the motor has a cup (not a cap as I earlier incorrectly wrote) so I will lubricate with Nuto 32.

If lubricating a motor DO IT VERY SPARINGLY ! Stauffing boxes (caps) use grease, oil cups just a couple of drops. My Myford has not been lubricated for 50 years and runs fine. The internal workings of the motor will not take kindly to being splattered in lube. Good Luck, Noel.

Thanks Noel, not withstanding the price of oil now, I shall heed your good advice and it will be just a couple of drops.

For some motors, with the "flip top" oil caps, around the bearing (bush) there is a felt ring. In this way oil added through the oiler soaks into the felt, which acts as a reservoir, to lubricate the shaft and bush sparingly.

Howard.
