What is this

Clearing a deceased friends workshop & i found this. Anyone have a clue as to what it is.

I would guess at some sort of special chuck/faceplate, the bore fitting the spindle on a wood turning machine.

When I said bore, I was referring to the keyed bore of the device, this being the method of attaching it to whatever machine it came off.

looks like some form of cutter for boring out a large hole, if you look at the spacing of the sets of round holes they are staggered so with some more inserts you could cover the whole swept surface. The two profiles of cutter that face inwards would ensure it is ctr cutting.

I took it that it was complete as it was . But not knowing . I guess i will never know.

For those who aren't inclined to view Steve's General Chit Chat video, here's a screen-shot of the mystery item.

Carbide cutters, holes full of sawdust. Two yellow cutters facing outwards with the inserts near the circumference, and two the other way round with the inserts near the centre. Plus two holders in the round holes, with the inserts facing out.

My guess is it cuts a profile into a plank for a constructional or decorative purpose, like this:

The little cast plate could be ali bronze ? Noel.

Dave. I am wondering now. He made a few Showman's engines. So from your input i wonder if it was some sort of profiling tool for the canopies.

It sure did look like bronze. It looks like brass to the camera but more coppery looking to the eye.

IMO that's just a DIY fly cutter/face mill and the guy who made it just keeps all of the cutters mounted on it for stroage.

It's not a million miles away from this much simpler version, described as an 'Insert Rabbeting Shaper Cutter':

I suspect Steve's tool would be worth a few bob to anyone who needed one. Loads of different cutter positions - I bet it was expensive new.

I did have a look for a name or maker , but found none. So not sure if home made or bought. I will clean it up some more & try & show some close ups. For anyone who can identify.

If i get time, i will make a shaft & fit in the chuck on the pillar drill & see what it cuts in wood.

Could it be intended to turn the ragged end of a bar to a nice peg - like an integral dowel?

The rails of country-style chairs include lots of such pegs, and it would speed up production if they were all the same size, automatically.

But perhaps not ...

It is a surface planer, possibly experimental adaptation for metal of the form used in drilling machines for wood. They are not very good for wood.
