A better description in the post title of what you are wanting would get better results.

Drawings of a metric version of the Minnie can be found here to download: **LINK**

Or better still a Wanted add in the classifieds which will stay on the list until you delete it rather than a post that soon drops out of sight.

The build articles that were in ME are online and are basically what the book contains so you could save yourself £50 by looking at those.

Please be careful with Julius' drawings that boiler can't be made as shown and is not a proven design.

Just look on the web Br, some there for over £100.

Agreed.

Perhaps you should have said save £100 instead of £50.

Anyway, I will say no more, keep out of it, and let him source elsewhere.

Is the book no longer for sale then bill?

Hi Jason,

New member and model engineering newbie here. Are you refering to the 'engine called "minnie"' drawings? If so, what's the issue with the boiler assembly?

Well the most obvious that will stop you being able to put it together is that he shows the cylinder and weigh shaft bracket held on by bolts/screws inserted from INSIDE the boiler. Not only can't you get to the inside but if you were tempted to solder them in during boiler building due to their radial positions there is no way you could position the two castings onto them. Boiler barrel and thickening plate should be tapped for bronze bolts or studs.

The shared manifold may not please all boiler inspectors so check first if they want the water gauge fed separately.

He has gone down from 16swg to 1.5mm material but no calculations are shown as to whether this will still produce a safe boiler at the same working pressure.

Stainless steel spacers for the stays will be near impossible to fit and not the right material. Solid stays soldered in are more commonly used now, either rivits or turned from bronze for the threaded ones that take the hornplate fixings

Several other small alterations which make it no longer and "accepted design"

So if you are thinking of using those drawings speak with your likely boiler inspector first before buying any materials

Smokebox from copper may be a bit too soft, better from brass. Don't bend the spokes into a lazy "S" shape like he shows, should be tight minimal radius bends at the of palm and hub.

To be clear Jason is mostly talking about the Metric Minnie drawings.

The shared manifold does apply to original design as well.

One on Ebay at present. Buy it now at £34.99 or make an offer. That seems to be the going rate.

I think I have a copy of this book & not likely to build one - will have a look when I get home.

Found it - eventually ! My "almost zoned by interest" bookcase arrangement failed on this occasion - probably because I read it again a couple of years ago & didn't put it back in the right place.

1971 MAP Publication hardback, looks like it might be a first edition in generally good condition. All pages appear to be present, no corners turned, haven't seen any "notes" made, but there is a bit of wear to the top edge of the dust jacket. Doesn't smell particularly "old book" or of stale smoke & the binding is tight.

Send me a PM if your are interested - as I said, I am not likely to build a Minnie & I'm sure we could work something out if this is the printing you are looking for.
