I’ve just seen these and thought they looked quite handy. Are there any modern versions of these available at modest cost? I’m really not interested in the large plastic visor type.

You can buy clip-on flip-downs to add or I had my optician make me up a special set of specs with a permanently attached flip down when i was still working. It's also possible to buy assorted loupes with without prescription lenses if your budget goes high enough

You could try eBay for " Dental Loupes "

Yes, but they're very unlikely to be pleasant to work with if the cost is below around £500.

Can I take it you do know why dentists wear these flip-up or through-the-lens loupes rather than, say, Optivisors?

These are sold on eBay and are inexpensive. They have 5 different magnification lenses and a built in LED light. All made from plastic but does the job. Do a search for Head Magnifier with LED

The field of view is very small with what are effectively small telescopes. They are good for their intended purpose, but unlikely to be suitable for most engineering tasks. The headbands with additional lenses as in the previous post are more suitable.

Some of these magnifying units make you look as though you have been assimilated into the Borg collective.

I often think young people, constantly at their phones, are a short step away from the Borg.
