Good morning- a friend of mine has this old treadle lathe in his barn and is thinking of disposing of it. He has been unable to locate any maker's name and nothing is known of it's history. Any observations on it's likely identity or value would be gratefully accepted.

I have been unable to see the lathe for myself as it is in a remote part of Wales, a long way from me.

Thanks in anticipation,

John.

I believe it is some model of Relm. The bottom picture on that page is very similar to yours.

I think AndrewD has the answer. Lines and style seem identical to that Super Relm. Just no name cast into the bed which is strange. The patterns would need modification to remove it.

Maybe it was a "post-production" machine made by Breeds after the Cheltenham Works Co, who originally made Relm machines, was liquidated in 1927. The corporate goings on described by Tony seem a bit strange but excising the name from the patterns would have been one way of making it clear that a new company was doing the production. Possibly to avoid a bad reputation from poor quality control in the run down of the old firm.

Apart from the surface rust, it looks to be reasonably complete, 3 & 4 jaw chucks, Faceplate, Changewheels, so could be useable machine.

A nice refurbishment project!

Just think, with a hurricane lantern you would have no fear of power cuts!

As it has back gear and the leadscrew in front of the bed it looks like a SuperRelm

Thank you gentlemen, I knew you would come up trumps!

I have passed a link to this thread to the owner of the lathe.

John.
