First small simple project to practice on with my new machines. It may not be worth it for the price of the item as it is a second scribe block that I have it came to me with surface rust on it.

It is a Moore & Wright scribe block adjusting arm that fits into the block. I still need to drill and tap a hole for the adjustment screw and also make the screw as well as can be seen in this photo.

As can be seen the original looks in a poor state and the thread for the adjustment screw has stripped

Got to start somewhere; why not with a simple repair job, the first of many no doubt, looks a good finish.

George.

Yes - I think that would pass M&W's QA department.

Model Engineers don't throw things away!

They repair them, sometimes to better than new!

Derek's version looks better than the original. Is it me, or is the worn out item an alloy casting?

Whatever it is it is light like Ali but easily damaged the rough area on the side I thought was raised but it is not.

I tried to get it finished and assembled today but what with shopping having a new carpet played and a new bed base installed workshop time has been limited. I did try to identify the thread on the thumb screw but could not so I will just make it with the taps and dies that I have a 5/32nd UNF is close as well as a 2BA but neither are the same so a new thumb screw will also need making and a threaded hole in this piece need doing after I have ordered a drill bit for the new thread why can't these things be simple

Can hardly believe someone made a scribing block arm out of Aluminium let alone M & W as a softish metal is totally unsuitable for this purpose, but there it is. I'm thinking someone has made a replacement in the past?

If the tread is not BA might it be something like 3/16 BSF?

Would not expect M & W to use something odd like 3 BA or ANF (Unified )thread.

But if you have to make an adjusting screw as well, you ncan use whatever seems most suitable, based on the equipment available.

Tomorrow I will have a good look with a thread gauge to see what that says. I have UNF and Ba dies to check against but not BSF so I will be making new using the UNF threads.

After having a new workshop and a lathe and milling machine I thought it a good swap to have the bed and carpet along with double glazing fitted to keep the wife happy, which also means I can have more workshop timewink
