605 forum posts | I live about 20 miles from the Hinckley C nuclear power station being constructed. Can see Big Carl (a crane) from our house. Went into Bridgwater last week, first time in over a year and was amazed at the development going on there. Moral of the story for old struggling industrial towns, build a nuclear power station.!!! 869 forum posts | So far behind schedule I hear they are employing 1700 'extra' people to speed things up. 1700 x £50,000 = £85,000,000/p.a. And we need at least another six like this to replace those to be taken out of service soon. |

605 forum posts | Quite right John, Hinkley. Slip of the finger, my excuse is that I'm a Brummie so more familiar with the Hinckley of Leicestershire fame. Yes did learn early on in my Somerset sojourn that Bridgwater does not have an 'e' after the 'g'. (A sojourn that has lasted 26 years so far!) Bill D. |

Remember it well , we used to tell the relatives we were living in Cabbagewater , they only came once and understood why the name ! I note that Port Talbot still smells sulphurous, but not as bad as it used to be. There are now living trees on the hills north of the motorway, when I was a boy they were covered in dead trees. 152 forum posts 6 photos | Bill, I worked in R&D (later to become Development and Technical) from 76 through to 86 with a sojourn to Southampton Uni from 79-82. I have very fond memories of working there. Yes, I remember the railway line which I think brought in caustic and acid for the cellophane process although I think the oil for the power station came in by pipeline from Dunball?? I transferred my pension when I moved on to Grand Metropolitan in 1986 but am now getting the benefit since reaching 65 in Jan. Steve |

869 forum posts | Just a little background, as I remember ,when they came to fit the boilers into Dungeness B they were too big ! A slight embarrassment , final costs were about £110m ,as against £70m estimate. A similar size today , Hinkley C is £23 billion ( a pig has flown by my window ). We have just lost 1GW of reliable 'green' energy from the Grid, an awful lot of wind turbines. |
