I seem to remember reading somewhere there is a government scheme for replacing boilers with heat pumps and a grant of up to £7500, worth looking into…..

Thread: Building a car from scratch

that's a lovely looking car, it must represent hundreds of hours of work and planning. I modified a mk1 mr2 with a V6 a few years ago, its all of the little things that take so much time, connecting up the heater, ECU wiring, matching the clutch to a gearbox and engine it was never intended to fit, sourcing suitable engine mounts, then there is the brakes, cooling, suspension and so on and on.

I have I think the 23rd edition, which I haven't used apart from a causal flick though, my go to for most of the information I need is the Zeus book or for more involved things (rare for me). The Engineers edge web site: Engineers Edge - Engineering Reference Data and Tools

Thread: RDG Dies
09/08/2023 10:10:56

Is the die holder the correct size for the die, metric and imperial can be different outside diameters, when using a sliding die holder with a slightly undersize die in the holder the screws holding the die will push the die off center in the tailstock which will result in the die stripping the thread or a very poor undersized thread.

Thread: Spiders
20/07/2023 13:03:38

peppermint sprays are used by alarm companies to stop false alarms due to spiders getting where they shouldn't. Also there is the conker (horse chestnut) in the corner of the room solution, which is supposed to discourage them, I'm not sure how this works or if it does work, but my wife places them in each room in the corners and we have had very few spiders or webs since she started to do this

Tragic but very true, they'll still be digging that stuff up in a thousand years

3D printing is far too slow, the cycle time of that press will be a couple of minutes at most, to print the same thing will be days and will not produce the item anywhere near strong enough for the application.

Thread: Chinese diesel heater
06/01/2023 09:04:33

Wow, this thread is amazing so much concern for safety from a bunch of guys that probably are using machine tools with little to no guarding or outdated safety features last reviewed in the 1960's whilst working on their own for the most part in sheds and that's ignoring the silver soldering and welding.

I think you all have bigger safety issues in your workshops than worrying about one members diesel heater install. Which I'm sure he has tested fully because he appears to be no fool and has taken time to research the install and operation of the heater, and will be satisfied that he is not going to burn his workshop down or cause a major incident.

I know most of you take your safety seriously otherwise you wouldn’t have all reached such great ages. But please look again at your own safety practises and the risks involved, I’m sure most of you can make improvements.

I would imagine that they are not permitted to grease the racks because of contamination of the environment in a National Park, so lack of any form of lubrication will not help in the excessive wear.

I find it easier if your trying to center a round bar or hex or square to mark the center of the bar using either a center finder or just drawing a line between corners then align that marked center with a tail stock center which will get you quite close before using a DTI for the final few adjustments
