Small Drill Press

Morning all,

I’m after a small or mini drill press which is to be able to drill straight holes and ream up to 5mm diameter. I’ll be drilling stainless steel and high carbon steels to around 3mm thick.

I’ve got limited space so ideally it needs to be able to tuck under the bench when not in use.

Any recommendations?

Almost any small drill press will do the job. You could look at some of our suppliers or there are a couple of nice lookers on homeworshop.org.uk

Many of the drill presses designed for small hole drilling operate at speeds that may not be suitable for drilling in stainless steel and tougher carbon steels, most will certainly be too high for reaming.

As already suggested a small drill press with belted speed changing should do what you want, failing that you can always fit a 3 phase motor controlled from a VFD to dial in the best speed for the job.

Most of the drill presses that you can tuck under the bench are alloy which puts you into Aldi territory and will bend if leant on. Check out the weights before you buy.

You've all pretty much confirmed my suspicions after I’ve researched these drills, they’re all too fast and light weight!

Im currently using a sieg mill but I was just having a look if there was anything suitable to save me swapping the mill over to every time I want to drill a hole. Guess I’ll just have to stop being lazy 😀

What do you need to swap over on the mill? Take the milling cutter out and put a drill bit in? 99% of my drilling is done on the mill, setting out with handwheel or DRO is quicker and more accurate than marking out and locating a punch mark so more than save the time..

It's going to be more rigid and likely squarer than a lot of cheap small bench drill and vari speed to. Even with a bench drill you should be able to get speed down enough to suit a machine reamer which is approx half drill speed.
