Thread: Small Drill Press
12/02/2021 12:49:33

Thanks all,

You've all pretty much confirmed my suspicions after I’ve researched these drills, they’re all too fast and light weight!

Im currently using a sieg mill but I was just having a look if there was anything suitable to save me swapping the mill over to every time I want to drill a hole. Guess I’ll just have to stop being lazy 😀

12/02/2021 10:50:10

Morning all,

I’m after a small or mini drill press which is to be able to drill straight holes and ream up to 5mm diameter. I’ll be drilling stainless steel and high carbon steels to around 3mm thick.

I’ve got limited space so ideally it needs to be able to tuck under the bench when not in use.

Any recommendations?

cheers

Andy

Would it notice if you opened the hole up to 2.5mm? If so M-machine do 2.5mm dia 304

2.5mm might just do the trick, good shout that, didn’t realise M-Machine existed, they stock some good sizes and materials for the knife maker.

Thanks

3/32 is 2.38mm. A quick search suggests that 304 stainless is not through hardenable so are you sure you couldn't drill out the hole to 3mm and use the rod you have? Get a 3mm cobalt drill from toolstation.

Correct 304 isn’t a hardening steel and drilling to 3mm would be an easy solution but the rest of the construction is set up for 3/32, it’s a faff but getting 3mm rod down to 2.38mm is the easiest route. Unless anyone can point me in the direction of 3/32 304 rod?

FWIW I'd buy some. For example MACC models have 3/32" 303 @ £0.76 p/ft. +postage.

if it was only that easy, long story / process short, I have a piece of 304 ss bar that a pin is passed through and peened to the side of a knife handle, then the whole thing is polished so the pin becomes invisible, so unless it’s the same steel the pin won’t hide properly ........ hard to explain really.

A box tool would be handy.

Thor

Would be handy, except I haven’t got a lathe to put one in!

I’ve got some 3mm 304 grade stainless steel that I need to reduce fairly accurately as it needs to be a snug fit in a reamed hardened steel 3/32 hole. The pieces only need to be 25mm long.

I realise a lathe would be the tool for the job but I haven’t got one so I was wondering what the best method would be. Would spinning it in my mill and holding a file or sandpaper to it be accurate enough?

Thanks

Thanks folks.

That looks a beauty Phil, like you say they don’t come up for sale very often.

19/10/2020 08:10:49

I know they’re as rare as hens teeth but I’ve been looking for a small bench top SG for the last couple of years.
I haven’t got the room or need for a full size one but I have seen in the past small SG that watch makers and other people that make small parts would use.

Apart from on line auction sites are there any machinery dealers I might be lucky and find one?

Thread: Soldering 304 grade stainless steel
18/10/2020 20:27:57

Hope I’ve posted this in the right place but has anyone had much experience in soldering 304 ss? If so what’s the best flux and solder to use.

Ive been told 304 is difficult to solder.

Thanks

Thread: SIEG SX2.7 Mill DRO
11/10/2020 08:35:34

Thank you for the replies folks, budget wise I’m a firm believer in “buy once cry once” so I don’t mind spending to get a good product.
If I’m honest Its the fitting and set up that has me more concerned, I like the suggestion Ketan makes for a machine specific dro which would make fitting simpler?

Thanks

10/10/2020 21:16:13

Had the mill a few months now and it’s a great piece of kit. Only downside, and it’s my own inability not the machine fault but I’m continuously getting lost with the dials on the handles, so I want to invest in a DRO set for all x,y,z directions I also struggle reading the small in built quill dro.

Ive spent the day dro hunting but there’s that many I’m not sure which to get, also easy of fitting would have to be a consideration.

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andy,

I was trained in pocket knife making by a Sheffield little mester. Traditional style folding knives and miniature fixed blades.

I still make the occasional knife in between all the other projects.

Let me know what type of knife you make, milling the liners is not something I do but modern makers seem to machine materials a lot more.

Mick

Hi Mick,

ive cut my teeth so to speak making fixed blade bushcraft, hunting and a few kitchen knives, I’m just getting into making small UK legal carry slip joint and friction folders.

cheers

I’ve subscribed and having read a couple of copies digital reading isn’t for me. It’s a brilliant series and just what I need so Is it possible to buy back dated hard copies of the magazine?
thanks

Hi Andy,

In your opening post, you say: ' I’ll have loads of questions to ask about the mill '.

If the digital version of the MEW magazine works, I would strongly suggest that you subscribe to it.

Once subscribed, you can look at the back issues of the magazine, starting from issue MEW 261.

Issue 261 starts off a 'Milling for beginners' series based on the SX2.7, written by Jason, who is one of the moderators on this forum.

The series continues in alternate issues of the magazine, 15 parts, which ends in issue 289. Jason has a thread on the forum based on the series. See link .

In the absence of a 'hands on' coarse, I would suggest that most of the questions you have about the mill, along withe the associated tooling will probably be answered in the series.

Thank you for this, that’ll be really helpful and probably save me from asking stupid questions!

Thanks for the welcomes folks.

Hi David and thank you.

I don’t make models as such but i make small folding pocket knives, one of the build processes involves milling a relief on the inside which stops the blade rubbing on the handle.
In my search for a mill this forum came up with a lot of useful information hence me joining.

Andy
